Morning all. I woke up in the middle of a dream where I was loading a catapult with bricks. No clue why or who we were planning to hurl the bricks at, I just know that it was my job to fill the basket with bricks to throw. Oh well, in less war like fashion let’s start the morning with a writing prompt. Unless anyone feels like defending the castle. If so, feel free. I’m setting my timer for fifteen minutes.
I like this. I wasn’t sure where I was going at first and fumbled a bit. However I think evil Carol has done something naughty. Like maybe helped someone hack the system. I’m not sure for what ends but I will think about that.
October 13th: Enjoy your breakfast.
“Enjoy your breakfast,” she said as she sauntered away. Her hips swayed as she gave into the temptation of a satisfied strut. I blinked.
As far as exit lines went, it was a good one. Earlier I was told that once this work trip was over I would no longer be employed with Donovan and sons. The email came in shortly after three am. I only found it because I checked my e-mail before going down to the hotel’s breakfast area.
After the e-mail came I tried contacting anyone remaining at the office and found I couldn’t get in touch with anyone. Figuring that I would catch them in the breakfast area I went in. Carol was th only one remaining. She informed me that the decision stood.
As I watched her saunter away I couldn’t help but stare at her retreating form. I knew she didn’t like me although I wasn’t entirely certain why. I also knew I hadn’t done anything that would constitute a firing offense.
The training we were here to complete wrapped up the evening before and we were scheduled to drive back today. As I had driven my own vehicle down I had no fear of being left behind. The drive back was normally done in two days and I knew the others were going to spend a little time touring the quaint downtown and local attractions before heading back. They would stay in a hotel along the way and finish the journey on the following day.
I was in no mood to play tourist. I fixed a cup of coffee and checked out of my hotel. I liked the car to my phone and as soon as I navigated onto a straight stretch of road I began calling the office as I drove back to town.
I was two hours down the road before I managed to connect with anyone.
“Donavan and Sons how may I direct your call,” Alice, the senior CEO’s admin said. I used her direct line and was thrilled to be able to reach a person instead of a recording.
“This Is Margaret Mason calling for Daniel Donavan,” I said into the speaker. The miles rolled our beneath my car tires.
“Oh Ms. Mason, I thought you’d left us. H just came back from a meeting I can put you through directly, I know he’ll want to talk to you.”
I nearly wilted with relief as my call was transferred.
“Maggie, is that you?” Danial replied. “What is all this nonsense about you leaving the company. Don’t tell me you are going to work for the Harrisons?”
“That’s what I’m calling to find out,” I said.
“What do you mean?”
I explained about the three am e-mail and breakfast of champions.
“I didn’t send that e-mail and I wouldn’t have authorized anyone else to. You say it came from my office?”
“Your account,” I replied.
“You saved the e-mail?” he asked.
“Saved and backed it up,” I replied.
When can you make it back?” he asked.
“I’m on the highway now,” I told him. “I’ll get in later tonight.”
“Ring me when you get in, regardless of the time.”
