Running a little bit slow today. The cold just made me want to snuggle back down into the covers for just a little bit longer. Bit the coffee is brewing and it is time to get this day started so everyone in that’s going in and let’s start today’s prompt.
I started off sort of knowing where I was going (like in the first couple of paragraphs) but then my brain decided on a different course about halfway through. I like the second thought better so if I go back to this I’ll have to rework the front.
Friday, January 13th: It rained for three days.
It rained for three days. The weathermen predicted a clear dry stretch and none of them had been prepared. ‘Well, some were more prepared than others,’ Ian admitted.
He glanced back and saw Sean taking out yet another helpful item from his back pack. Sean was one of those people who prepared for every contingency and seemed to always expect the worst. While Ian knew the others were marveling over the fact that Sean had actually brought rainy weather gear with him when they did not, Ian knew the truth. Sean hadn’t expected the rain any more than they had. His bag was at least fifteen pounds heavier than anyone else’s because he always carried emergency kit. Ian knew if anyone delved deeply into Sean’s bag they would find items necessary to survive earthquakes, forest fires and possible even zombie attacks.
T had been years since Ian looked into Sean’s over sized kit so he didn’t know if the zombie fighting gear was still a part of his packing regimen or not. Ian looked away and smiled to himself. He wasn’t going to tell anyone of Sean’s proclivities. This week he was enjoying the attention of being the only one prepared and Ian thought it best to let him enjoy it.
‘It doesn’t change the fact that we’ve been stuck in the cabin for three days though,’ he thought turning back to the window. That hadn’t been the plan. The plan involved long hikes, canoeing on the lake and possibly even doing a little fishing. There were three of them with permits and the lake and rivers here about were said to be fairly brimming with fish. Ian had not been fishing in years and was looking forward to the whole process, from the catching to the cooking and eating.
The rain pretty much scarpered that idea. The rain was too heavy to risk a canoe, or really any boat he could manage. ‘A battleship might survive.’
The rain was sheeting down and he was certain the lake was rising to try and meet him since he couldn’t get to it. The river had turned into a frothing rapids and was well over its banks. Unfortunately that meant that it was also covering parts of the road they used to get to the cabin.
It meant it wasn’t really safe to leave yet either. There was no danger, yet. They had been assured by the rangers. Their cabin was well above the flood waters. It was just the road that was impassable. Driving would be hazardous. If an emergency evacuation was needed, they may have to take the canoes and leave the cars.
The rangers suggested they stay put. Their position was noted and being monitored. For now, staying put was their best option.
‘Not the two weeks away I planned,’ he decided.
Aside from Sean he didn’t really know the others that well. In fact, he had been surprised that Sean was here. He signed up for the trip as part of a group get away. There was someone managing all of the details as though this was a packaged tour, minus the bus and color coded t-shirts. The getaway was for singles who simply wanted to get away and have a nice relaxing trip without standing out as the one single person.
Everyone came on their own, everyone was a stranger. Sean had been a surprise and for the most part they pretended not to know each other.
