Writing Prompt: Fire rained down from the sky.

Morning all. I hope everyone had a great weekend. I feel a little stuffy, but still ready to ease back into the work week. I’ve started putting my morning workout before anything else (even coffee and the writing prompt, I know shocking) so I am actually a little more awake now when I sit down to actually begin my dy. Awake but sore. I keep hoping that those endorphins other people talk about from exercise actually kick in, but I am skeptical. For now I just feel awake and sore. But I suppose it is time for the mental work out. So shall we get going? Fifteen minutes on the timer and off we go. Feel the burn.

I didn’t think this was what I was going to end up with. To be honest I didn’t know what the above sentence would conjure. I sort of like this. It could be part of a good fantast story. I don’t think it is the beginning though. It is something I want to come back to and play with, so that is something.

Monday, February 27th: Fire rained down from the sky.

Fire rained down from the sky.  The ground shook.  A look over my shoulder revealed the mountain was sending up a column of ash into the sky.  With the fire raining down were small stones, They fell, hissing with heat and then floated on the water.

It was as though the laws of nature upended themselves and all that I knew was gone.  I watched the terror of those around me as they panicked and fled.  Some fled to their homes bolting the doors as though stout locks would keep them safe.  Others went towards the pier, looking for escape.  Some simply ran, no direction in mind just the need to get away ruling their actions like panicked animals.  There were those dead in the streets from accidents that occurred and thoughtless violence as people merely strove to clear their way through whatever obstacles, no matter if they were objects or living people.

All around me was chaos, death and destruction.

Something bumped my shoulder and the vision began to fade.  The world was as it had been.  It was pleasant, maybe slightly warm today.  I shivered.  I knew what I had seen.  These visions had come upon me before and they were never wrong.  However I knew no one would believe me.  I had spoken of such things before and merely been laughed at.  I felt the time click slowly past inside my body and knew that the hourglass was running out for this city.  Soon the sands would be gone and the destruction I saw would come.

I looked at my small party.  We planned to stay the week, maybe more if the trading was good.  They looked to me now, recognizing the after effects of my vision.  They paused in mid task waiting.

“Pack everything up quickly,” I said, using our tribe’s language rather than the common trade tonge.  I knew none but our party would understand.  “We must leave now.”

There were nods and such must have been my face that the others didn’t question the decision.  We loaded out wagon, securing our goods in record time.  I nodded and we took the road out of the city.  It was busy this time of day but no one showed the panic that would later fill them.  I felt a weight settle upon my heart.  I felt the desire to tell them, to warn them.  Tracan came to me and placed a hand on my shoulder.

“It will not go well if you try,” he said softly.  I nodded.  There were places we could no longer return to because my attempts to warn people had gone amiss.  In our tribe a seer was a gift to keep the people safe.  It was a gift from a gods and recognized as a heavy burden that I was tasked with carrying for the safety of the people.  In other places, I was considered a witch, a sorceress of evil repute or even filled with demons.

I suspected these people would just think us superstitious peasants and laugh rather than drive us from town, but I knew our leader was right.  No help would come from the warning, however much I wished to give it.

We continued out of town and still I carried the tension.  I could feel the others watching me, waiting for when it would be safe to slow down, to stop, to rest.  I could still feel the weight of the fire falling from the sky overhead and knew we had further to go before we were safe.
