Morning all. Happy mid week to you all. Have you ever woken up from a dream where you remember only one thing? In the dream just before I woke I was in an old fashioned diving suit and holding a spear gun as I walked across the bottom of the ocean. The one thought was “No one hides from Doctor Kildare.”. I am going to be thinking about that the rest of the day. So i thought I’d share. Now on with the prompt.
Somehow I suspect that there is going to be a body floating in the pool before this is done. Just a hunch.
Wednesday, April 26th: The celebration had been going on for hours.
The celebration had been going on for hours. She didn’t know what it was for, but at this point she suspected it was a celebration of her lack of sleep. She lay in the hotel bed wishing the large windows overlooking the patio pool and bar area were just a little more insulated.
‘And who puts a full bar next to a pool anyway?’ she thought as she stared up at the ceiling. She had the heavy drapes closed, but there was a slight gap at the top of the frame where the lights snaked past the curtain rod to dance on the ceiling. She wondered if the following morning would see the remnants of the party floating upon the waters of the pool.
She remembered being a small child and getting up extra early when they stayed in hotels just so she could start her day with a swim in the hotel pool. She could imagine her own horror at finding the pool filled with beer cans and possibly vomit.
‘Hopefully there are no children here,’ she thought as a loud cheer went up from the crowd below. Given the state of the party she couldn’t imagine some of it ending up in the pool. ‘Shouldn’t have left my ear phones at home,’ she added as laughter burbled up from below.
She remembered to pack her mp3 player, but somehow left her ear phones at home. Given her state of mind when she packed, she suspected that when she arrived she would find she forgot several things. Already she found she packed several items she wouldn’t need, doubtless they took the place of necessary items she hadn’t thought to grab.
She wondered if it was always like that. Death coming out of nowhere and slamming into your daily life like a freight train. By all rights she shouldn’t be here. She should have been at her home preparing for an upcoming meeting. Then the call came in and her daily life fell away.
The planes were booked solid for the next few weeks. She knew nothing would be held for her convenience. She would either make it on their time table or not at all. She knew it was punishment for leaving. For being the one member of the family to actually move away. She ignored the hard feelings and booked a rental car as she threw items into a bag.
An hour later and she extricated herself from the necessary meetings and was on the road, cut free of any expectations other than the drive home. She drove as far as she could in a day but knew she couldn’t do it in one go. It was simply too far.
Her need for sleep left her here for the night, listening to the festivities below and wishing for sleep. Tomorrow would be another long drive and she needed all she could get.
