The Fifteen Minute Novel 2023: Day 91

Welcome to the Fifteen Minute Novel. Each morning I spend fifteen minutes writing on a singular story line. Each morning starts with the last line of the previous day. The goal is to get a (very) rough draft out of the simple story idea and to avoid letting the story idea languish in limbo forever, actually writing it out. This is the third year I have done this writing experiment and each year I learn just a little bit about myself and the way I write as well as creating a framework for the story. But without further ado…

Day 91: Once back home, they moved to the kitchen table and sat down spreading the papers for the classes out on the table.

Once back home, they moved to the kitchen table and sat down spreading the papers for the classes out on the table.  As she looked over the papers, Gwen had to admit that some of the classes looked exciting.  She found she liked the thought of the general cookery courses but was really drawn towards the baking side.

‘You said you liked math didn’t you,” Margaret pointed out.  “Baking requires a lot of precise measurements from what I’ve seen so I can see why that might be something you find appealing.  You might want to think about doing both though,” She suggested.

“Both?” Gwen said.

“Well the class times don’t look like they overlap and you could not only see which one appealed to you more, but even if you liked the baking class more, you would still have a basic culinary knowledge to expand your own abilities at home,” Margaret explained.  “We could easily cover the costs of both sets of classes.”

“You would do that?”  Gwen said.

“Of course dear,” Margaret said.  “It’s all part of helping you to find out what it is you want to do.”

“Thank you,” Gwen replied.  She looked back at the two introductory courses that would run throughout the summer.  Her grandmother was right.  The schedules didn’t intersect.  The baking classes were in the late afternoons and the regular cooking classes were in the early mornings.

“I wonder if the scheduling is because of the use.  Restaurants being open ant night and bakeries being busy in the mornings.”

“Since the bakery and the classes seem to be associated I would guess they are related,” Margaret said.  “I’m not sure about the other.  Perhaps they do have a related restaurant for the more advanced students.”

“Gwen nodded and studied the pages.  “I think both of the introductory courses would work.”

“Excellent,” Margaret said. “I’ll call it in and get things settled.  There might be some things you need for each of the classes.  We might have another shopping excursion instead of our planned gallery visits.”

“Oh,” Gwen said.

Margaret waved off her concern. “We can arrange something later,” she said.  She looked excited by the prospect as she looked over the pages and extracted the phone numbers and pertinent information.

“You are enjoying this,” Gwen said.

“A little bit,” Margaret admitted.  “I must say it has been a really long time since I have gotten to do back to school shopping.  Even if it isn’t the fall and if these aren’t the notebooks and number two pencils.  I wonder if you will need those little chef’s shoes…”Her voice trailed off.

“I’ll just call in and see.”

Gwen nodded and left her grandmother to arrange the details.
