Writing Prompt: Let’s rewind the footage.

Morning all. Feeling a bit draggy today. Had a dream where I was driving a getaway car. I had a bag of something in the passenger’s seat but it wasn’t the police chasing me and I had a deep feeling of dread. Very odd. Anyway, time to get the day started. Timers at the ready and off we go…

This could be interesting. I suspect the body will appear later and someone will object to our witnesses but I don’t know the story yet.

Thursday, August 24th: Let’s rewind the footage.

“Let’s rewind the footage,” Cheryl suggested.  She smiled her best weathergirl smile and Carl smiled back before turning back to the bank of monitors.

“I don’t know what you are hoping to find,” he said.  Still, he rolled back the footage and let it play again.  It was a fairly typical scene.  Today instead of simply standing in front of a green screen and showing the weather maps with blue and red lines with cartoon depictions of weather systems, Cheryl was in the field.

It happened occasionally and Cheryl loved when it did.  The studio was cold so the equipment could be happy, but Cheryl’s outfits were usually weather dependent. The viewing public, according to their dresser seemed to favor putting her in thin cotton dresses unless a snow storm was threatening.  Only when snow was on the way was she ever actually not cold in the studio.

Today she was showing torrential rains and the remains of a bridge that washed out.  The footage was set to air in the next news cycle, but when they watched it, Cheryl thought she saw something in the back ground. As she usually went live for weather it was odd that she had the chance to review the footage before it went out.

“There,” she said.  “Pause.”

Carl did as she asked and paused the footage.  “I don’t see…” he began.

Cheryl jabbed a finger at the monitor.  “There. Watch.” Carl focused on the figure in the background. He was hooded against the rain but they could clearly see him looking around, and then spotting no one he ducked back into the tree line and came back with a large bag.  It was a large body shaped bag.

“It could just be illegal dumping,” Carl said.  “Just because it is shaped like a body, doesn’t mean it actually is.”

“True,” Cheryl said.  “But it does mean we can’t air the segment unless you can crop that out.  We can’t show someone dumping a body shaped bag behind me.”

“I suppose we could crop it out,” He said.  He marked the time down on the monitor and rolled the footage back.  He marked the time the man first appeared.  “Not too long, we can go in close on you for that long.  As you are talking seriously about the bridge collapse it might be more impactful for that part.”  He nodded to himself, mind already on editing.

“Do you think we should tell anyone?” Cheryl asked.
