The Fifteen Minute Novel 2023 Part 2: Day 10

And so the story continues fifteen minutes at a time…

Day 10: ‘Maybe anyone flowing will just leave.’

‘Maybe anyone flowing will just leave.’ It was a nice thought, but somehow Anna suspected that rain wouldn’t be enough to drive away anyone who wanted to follow her to her doorstep.  ‘Unless it was raining hard enough for ark building to be a possible occupation.’

“Penny for your thoughts?” Chirstopher said.

“Sorry, just contemplating ark building,” she said.  “So you work in the Library?”

“It sometimes feels that way doesn’t it?” he said.  “But no, I too am merely doing research. It simply doesn’t involve the archives.”

“And yet you know Ms. Travers? You aren’t by any chance buying skeletons from her are you?”

“No,” Christopher said.  “Although I wouldn’t say no.  It would dress up my living room nicely I think.  Or I could take it to class and use it to scare my students into completing assignments on time.  Of course that just might backfire.  They might just steal poor Jeffery and do unspeakable things to him.” Christopher leaned in.  “Things with Hawaiian shirts.”  He shuttered theatrically.

“Well we can’t have that,” Anna said.  “Jeffrey?”

“Yes,” Christopher answered.  For a second it sounded like he was answering to his name. Anna tried not to narrow her eyes.

“Your skeleton, the one you don’t have, but want to protect from Hawaiian shirts?” Anna prompted.  Her heart was beating faster and she wondered if those following her hadn’t found a way to stay out of the rain. ’And Marcus had to know I was visiting the archives if he was going to put a trap there.’

“Ah yes,” Christopher said. “I call every skeleton Jeffery, including my own.  That way I can distinguish it from my meaty bits.”

“Are the meaty bits called Christoper or is that just your mental self while your meaty bits are called something else.”

“Linus,” Christopher said.  “Only my intellectual self can be called Christopher.”

“And what happens if you purchase a female skeleton,” Anna couldn’t help but ask.

“Oh it would still be Jeffrey.  All skeletons are Jeffrey, including yours I would guess,” he said.

“Well, learn something new about yourself every day,” Anna said.  While she enjoyed the banter, Anna wasn’t entirely buying it.  Still it wasn’t as though she could just get up and walk out into the rain without causing issues.  It would look strange.  ‘Especially since no one else is moving.’

Looking around Anna saw that no one was actually moving.  Some people were on their phones and other drawing out their tome with coffee, but no one was heading towards the door.

As they watched the wind died down slowly and the rain fell in a more natural fashion.
