Morning all. Last night I discovered one of my mother’s neighbors now operates a towing service. A tow truck pulling out of a garage at 2 am is pretty loud. I hope who ever called him got home safely. As for us, time to wake up the fogged brain. Timer’s set and off we go.
I like the set up but have no clue where it is going. I am at least more awake so that is something.
Thursday, October 12th: The rocks were covered in moss.
The rocks were covered in moss. It was a deep green moss that looked more like felt. In fact she had seen felt covered rocks told as designer faux moss covered rocks that looked less like felt than these did. Alex bent closer and ran her fingers over the rocks. The deep green was fuzzy and when she looked closer she could see that there were tiny little bristles like miniature green flowers sticking up from the rock. She wondered if she could get close enough to get a good photo. She took her cell phone out but any time she got close enough to see the details, the photo fuzzed out. She pulled back the camera and took a picture hoping she could zoom in later.
It was hardly the first picture she had taken today,. She spent the morning wandering through the area behind the house. It was all part of their property now even though it looked a lot wilder than she thought a back yards was supposed to look. In their old house their entire back yard was taken up with a porch. There was no grass and all ot the plants were potted. There was a fire pit in the center, placed on a fireproof metal plate. There were chairs circling it and off to the side was a barbeque grill. It too had a metal plate underneath it. That was the limit to the back yard.
But then her father got a job offer. The dream job offer according to her parents, and here they moved. She wasn’t entirely certain what her father did. She saw him at breakfast as he poured his coffee into a travel mug. He kissed her mother good by and planted a kiss on top of her head. She then saw him at dinner. Usually he was running late. He apologized for it and complemented the meal. Then as she was tasked with washing the dishes he and her mother went into the living room. By the time she was finished with her chores he departed for the home office with paperwork. She would then not see him again until he was once again refilling his coffee mug.
It didn’t leave a lot of time for asking details.
Her parents seemed excited about the move though. They thought everything about it was for the best. She wasn’t so sure but they seemed happy so she told herself she would give it a try. As they moved she wondered if they believed in all of the things they were saying about fresh starts. From what she had seen thus far, everything remained more or less the same, just in a different place. She saw her father the same amount of time, although he looked less tired and stressed. Her mother’s job moved with them as she worked from home. She just e-mailed her work from a different house.
She was the one with all the differences. She shrugged them off. ‘I’d be leaving home in a couple of years anyway,’ she told herself. ‘And that would all be new so we’ll just call this practice.’ Sometimes she believed it, sometimes she didn’t.
The back yard was proving interesting. There were all sorts of things to study and explore. Her mother was annoyed by the muddy boots she wore exploring it in equal measure to the happiness she seemed to feel for her going into nature. Apparently nature was good for kids, if not for carpets. Keeping a white carpet white was a concern that took a back seat to nature being good for her.
It was not an easy battle for her mother. She wanted the house to be spotless at all times, as though a roving photographer might drop by unexpectedly in need of a catalog perfect location to shoot.
