Writing Prompt: Did you hear that noise?

Forgot to turn on my alarm. Just completely forgot and didn’t wake up until actual daylight came in. So off we go, just a little bit late. Timers set to fifteen minutes and lets see what comes out of the brain.

Okay this is an interesting start. Not sure where it is going, but I like it. Many options to choose from. Once I figure out where the story is going.

Monday, October 23rd: Did you hear that noise?

“Did you hear that noise?” Charlotte asked.  The nerves jumped through each word even though she tried to keep her speech quiet.

“It’s just the old house settling.” Maria told her in a whisper from her bed next to her.

Charlotte nodded to herself.  The other girls were asleep or at least pretending to be but she was glad Maria at least answered her.  Charlotte laid down and tried to convince herself it was just the old house.  That there was nothing to fear.  She was just spooked because she was used to more modern buildings and this was her first night in the dorms of the Academy.

‘And because the building looks like it belongs in a horror movie,’ she silently told herself.  The creaking continued and Charlotte pulled her blankets up to her chin and tried to tell herself she was just snuggling deeper into them because it was cold and not because she was hiding in her blankets like a child.

‘Ot would have been better if they arrived during the daylight, but the light was fading when they pulled onto the grounds.  The land surrounding the Academy was shadowed and creepy, the building even more so.  Goodbyes were short as the driver was just hired to take her from the station, and in almost no time at all she was being hurried upstairs to where the other girls were already getting ready for bed.  They were a mixed bag, but Maria was friendly and as her bed was right next to Charlottes, she considered that a good thing.  Luckily her luggage arrived before her so she was able to change for bed as well.

Then almost as soon as she was changed and ready to slip into bed, lights out was called and she, along with the other girls got into their beds.  There were a few whispers and giggles in the dark, but for the most part the room quieted down.  There were creaks and moans and she assumed it was the old house cooling down, settling from the day’s activity and maybe falling into slumber along with everyone else.

‘Maybe the house just snores,’ she thought.

She close her eyes and will herself to sleep, but found her mind was too active.  She was always excited after traveling somewhere new and had a hard time falling asleep if she hadn’t at least started to explore it a little.  ‘But there wasn’t time for that.’

Every section of her journey was late.  Including the bit where her parents told her she was going.  That she was being sent away came as quite the surprise.
