And so Part 2 continues on…
Day 35: The mental debate kept her occupied as she walked.
The mental debate kept her occupied as she walked. It wasn’t much of a debate and it was soon settled in her mind. She would wrap the blanket fully around her with any excess underneath so that she could have as much padding as possible but still stay warm. Pleased with her decision, Anna kept moving.
At lunchtime she ate and looked in on Marcus and Christopher.
“She isn’t in any of the footage,” Chirstopher said. “Not shielded with a cloak and not hidden with magic. You tested those we found with even a trace of magic about them and their signature didn’t match what you have on record for the girl.”
“True,” Marucs said. He frowned and toyed with the lip of his coffee mug. From what Anna could see they were in the coffee shop where she went after seeing Marcus, where she met Christopher. She wondered if they were hoping she would go back there or if they were trying to trace her movements.
“We have found nothing in the city that has even a trace of her magic. Her signature wouldn’t have changed,” Marcus said.
“A person’s signature can’t change,” Christopher reminded him. “Which is just more proof that she doesn’t have the funds to purchase the necessary components anymore. How she has managed to keep herself fed, housed and clothed without her magic to lean on is pretty impressive, especially considering her upbringing. It isn’t like she was taught those sorts of skills. Managing to get more than she needed to survive and purchase spell components would be well beyond her skills.”
“Most thought staying ahead of the hunters was well above their skills,” Marcus pointed out.
“That is different,” Christopher said. “That takes some intelligent observation, a little bit of skill and a boat load of luck. Plus, most thought she’d be using magic for as long as she could and her signature would be traceable.” Christopher shrugged.
Marcus nodded and picked up his coffee. “So where did she go from here?” he asked. Marcus finished the last of his coffee as Christopher gestured down the street.
“I lost sight of her when she turned left at the corner.” He said. “I couldn’t find a way to follow without looking suspicious.”
“And she already agreed to meet you,” Marcus reminded him. “You stay here, and I’ll see if I can pick up a trail.”
Chrisopher nodded and Marcus stood. He threw out his cup and walked towards the door. Anna let the spell follow him, curious as to what he might find and suspecting Christopher was just waiting in hopes of catching a glimpse of her.
Marcus followed Christopher’s directions and went down the street, turning as she had. Once there, he was out of sight. He took out a metal disk. Anna could tell even through the distance of the spell that it was platinum and fitted with shards of emeralds. Inscriptions had been etched in a spiral on the disk, the letters so small that it was hard to read without a specialized instrument.
Anna knew what it was as her father always carried one,. It was a tracking disk. Into it was loaded the magical signature of the mage being tracked and then the disk let the tracker see the remnants of their spells.
