Friday has arrived! Although I have to say that this week is starting to settle down the year. Post holidays things always seem a little unsettled and regular daily life seems strange. What do you mean we only have to worry about dinner and not extra snack trays for company? The hardest part is looking around and wondering why there are no sweets. I’m not a huge sweet person but in the holidays I get used to having sweets around and find them harder to give up post New Years. Sugar man, it is addictive. So let’s set the timer and see what today brings.
Not sure where this is going but I like the character. I just need to find the right story for her.
Friday, January 12th: The blanket was soft and warm.
The blanket was soft and warm. It was a light gray with darker bandings in random striations across it’s surface. It reminded her oddly of the layers of earth the geologists used to mark time. She doubted the blanket signaled eons of change in the earth.
‘But it will go well with my living room.’
Over all many of the color choices she made were in the gray palette. The couch was a deep charcoal that was one shade too light to actually be called black. The gray would suit it.
But perhaps I ought to look for some colors as well,’ she thought.
It was an odd thought for her. She left a space where her roommate chose items for their primary-colored brightness. She was told repeatedly that eye searingly yellow pillows were cheerful and that purple was the color of love and romance. As the purple chosen was the purple she associated with Kool-aid and Kool-aid she associated with cults Sarah wasn’t entirely certain she bought the description.
‘But some color might be nice,’ she told herself.
She did like color. She had not always been a black and gray sort of person. As she perused the offerings in the home store she searched within herself. Sarah didn’t think she was feeling particularly melancholy or depressed. She was over all fairly happy. Her lease ended and a promotion ensured that she could afford a place on her own. It wasn’t a big place but it was hers alone. Her roommate Farah took her moving out with unbridled glee.
She apparently had a friend with similar tastes who was looking for a place. Sarah tried not to take it personally and was happy to leave Farah’s primary color scheme behind. Unfortunately as much of the everyday items were what Farah brought to the shared space, and the reason she had the dominant color scheme in the apartment, Sarah had to go shopping.
She was going slowly, picking up items she liked. They were primarily grays and blacks. As she perused the items in front of her, she decided it was more of a reaction to Farah than an emotional change within herself. In the throw pillow aisle she found several pillows in jewel toned colors. She found herself drawn to the deep emerald green ones and added several of varying sizes and shapes to her cart.
Her first purchases had been necessities. Silverware, a new toaster, various kitchen implements. They were needed but not fun. But those were now at her apartment, and she moved on to the fun items. It was a slow process, kitting up her new place. Somehow, she hadn’t thought about it when she moved. In television shows and movies when people moved, they always had no trouble outfitting their apartments in a matter of hours or possibly days.
While Sarah was making more money after her promotion, rent was still her major expenditure with the other bills to follow. By the time she finished paying them there was not a whole lot left over. She made her list and as she had the funds she purchased the necessities before moving into the more decorative elements.
She was on her sixth month in the apartment and only now did decorative items like throw pillows make it to the list.
