It’s Friday, everybody mambo! Sorry, this week was just busier than anticipated. I am very happy to have reached the end of it. So shall we see what the final prompt of the week leads to? I think we should. Pens or keyboards at the ready and remember once you start, don’t stop until the timer runs out. Editing is for later, this is just to see what comes out of the mind when we focus.
Interesting. I like the opening up of possibilities with this. I’ll need to think about what story I want to tell with these characters though.
Friday, January 19th: She twisted the chain of her necklace between her fingers.
She twisted the chain of her necklace between her fingers. The small charm bounced on the taught chain and she reminded herself she was wearing one of the more delicate necklaces in her collection. Her habit of twisting the chain while thinking had snapped more necklace chains than she cared to count. It was one of the reasons she so often left off jewelry when she was working these days.
She let the chain go, the small charm falling to her shirt. The gold charm slipped on the silk of the blouse. She dressed well today, a far cry from the usual t-shirt and pajama pants combo she adopted after eight months of working from home. Her work desk was in a small back room of the house. She thought it might once have been a dressing room. The house was old and built when clothing did not boast streamlining and tended to expand a ladies presence by several feet. The desk holding her laptop and all relevant work items fit well and more importantly, it was off to the side, so when her work day was through, she could simply close the door and forget her workspace existed.
Today however required a meeting with lawyers. She did not want to look as though she just rolled out of bed so she took her time with her appearance. She chose her outfit carefully. Added jewelry and makeup and fixed her hair. It had been so long since she bothered that for a moment she hardly recognized herself.
While the clothes she worked in were chosen for comfort when sitting at a desk all day. Since all of her communications were through e-mails with the occasional text message thrown in for flavor, she didn’t bother with makeup and in fact often indulged in face masks while sitting at the desk. She considered the application and rinse off time her morning break.
At the moment her skin looked better than it had in a long time. ‘Maybe that’s the difference,’ she thought as she leaned back in her chair. Usually she applied the makeup to cover different skin issues. Given that she no longer had many skin issues, the makeup looked different.
She had certainly gotten several complements at the law offices. ‘But that could just be because they wanted my cooperation.’
She passed the year mark of separation required before the divorce could be finalized. Everyone was hoping that she would sign the papers with no issue and not complicate the finalization. As this past year without Jerry had been the best year she could remember, she wasn’t likely to complicate things. She was happy to have him gone and did not want him back.
At the offices he was waiting. For some reason he decided to bring his new girlfriend. His very pregnant girlfriend. She wondered if it was to help encourage him to let him go or if he even thought about it.
