Morning everyone. Is it me or did this week sort of fly by? Maybe it is just me. It just feels like it has been a fast week. Somehow w are already at Thursday. So let’s get started on Thursday’s Prompt. Timers at the ready and off we go.
It took me a while to figure this out and I think if I do something with this I will need to strip it back and re think it before writing.
Thursday, February 22nd: It felt like they were finally getting somewhere.
It felt like they were finally getting somewhere. “So you were on your way home?” he asked.
Jefferson nodded. He blinked and Frank could see the weight of recent events on the man. Still he could not afford sympathy to let him stop. They needed as much information as a they could get before things got out of hand.
“I worked late,” Jefferson said. His voice was dry and Frank realized they had been going at this for a while. He walked over to the fridge and took out a bottle of water. He took the bottle over to Jefferson and handed it to him. Jefferson offered a soft smile as thanks. Frank flicked the corners of his mouth up in response before falling back into his habitual settled lines.
They couldn’t afford to stop now, but there was no reason to make it any more torturous than necessary.
Jefferson twisted the cap off of the bottle and took a long draw of the cool liquid. Frank watched as he leaned his head back, watching Jefferson’s throat as he swallowed. Jefferson finished drinking and took a deep breath. He set the now half empty bottle down on the table. He cleared his throat.
“I worked late,” he repeated. “We had a project due and I was almost through with my section. I was on a roll and wanted to get it finished. I thought I could let it sit over night and then come back the next day to look over everything and correct any errors when I had fresh eyes.”
Jefferson shook his head slowly, gaze firmly fixed on the past. “I lost track of time and by the time I was finished it was late, really late. The office building was dark with my coworkers already gone. I closed down my computer and turned out the lights in the office. I left,” Jefferson said.
Frank nodded. Jefferson’s office building had been checked. They knew the time he logged out of his computer, the time he used his employee pass to exit the building and the time he used his parking pass to get his car out of the parking garage next door. In addition to the time stamps they had Jefferson on multiple security cameras. Jefferson was exactly where he said he was when he said he was there.
They in fact knew more about his movements than they did anyone elses. Frank tried to think of him as innocent in this mess, but the amount of evidence showing his location at any given moment seemed a little too much like the setting up of an alibi. It wasn’t a thought he shared as everyone else believed him to be innocent. There was something though, something that to Frank didn’t quit match up. He just couldn’t quite put his finger on it.
“I was hungry, so I stopped to eat,” Jefferson continued. Frank blinked. They had Jefferson on those security cameras, they even had the receipt from the purchased meal.
‘It’s the restaurant,’ Frank realized. He felt his pulse quickening. He tried to hide his excitement so Jefferson would not catch on.
