Do you know, for the second morning in a row I woke up just before my alarm? I like to think my body is just falling into a habit, although two days doesn’t seem like much. I really like waking up without an alarm. If my body would do that on a regular basis I would be thrilled. But for now, let’s jump into the morning writing prompt. Timers set and off we go.
I stopped when the timer went off but I did want to keep going. I think the MC is going to decide not to g, something will happen to the rest as it is a trap for our MC and we will have to go from there. Admittedly what happens will be determined by what the story is about. I’m thinking fantasy. Definitely taking notes on this one.
Tuesday, March 26th: Jenny danced across the grass.
Jenny danced across the grass. “We’re going to Wonder World,” she sang. She repeated the phrase over and over as sh spun varying the cadence and the speed of the words with each passing. I couldn’t help smiling at her enthusiasm, but I had to admit I didn’t share it.
I had never heard of Wonder World. I was more than willing to admit such things were rarely on my radar. I routinely missed various amusements others seemed to know about. I half thought there was a secret network among them that I was somehow cut off from. However, this time, I was fairly certain until the envelope arrived, neither had Jenny.
That didn’t seem to bother her any and she danced around the yard already emotionally high on all the fun she knew a place called Wonder World would no doubt provide. I tapped the contents of the envelope against my leg. Wonder World was, according to the map provided, not far from here. It would be only an hour’s drive.
‘Surely someone would have mentioned going,’ I thought as I watched Jenny dance. I knew that I would be asking the others in the office in the morning. I might also surreptitiously ask if anyone heard of the contest I won. Somehow, without knowing I entered a contest, I managed to win two all expense passes to Wonder World. Evry ride, every game, every wonder was available to me because I was a winner.
I knew if I asked Jenny she would just tell me t was one of those contests where you are automatically entered for purchasing something. She would then chide me about not paying attention to the world around me. Jenny thought I only paid attention to boring things. The fact that I found the boring things interesting was never really mentioned. It often amazed me that we were friends.
‘We are friends because Jenny decided we would be back in kindergarten,’ I reminded myself. At snack time she plunked herself right down beside me and declared it. It was a done deal from then on. There were plenty of ups and downs over the years, but we still counted as friends. She was thrilled to be going on adventure, and one that her currently limited budget probably wouldn’t have stretched to include. In truth there was no one I would rather take on adventure, but this adventure seemed a bit off to me.
‘I have three days to look into it,’ I reminded myself. ‘Perhaps they just opened and this was part of their promotional campaign.’ I knew I would look into the details before committing, even if I couldn’t deny Jeny her moment of fun.
Jenny stopped dancing. “You know what?” she said. “We should get everyone else to come along. Make it a group trip. We could all caravan up there and spend the day at the park. They’d have to buy tickets, but they shouldn’t be that expensive.”
I nodded even though I could feel my stomach rolling. While I had been friends with Jenny since kindergarten her friends were not really my friends. They tolerated me because of Jenny and I tolerated them for the same reason. I knew once the others got involved there would be no stopping the trip. Nothing I unearthed would mean much.
I sighed to myself. ‘What do you think?’ I asked myself. ‘Someone is getting you out f the way for something nefarious? Things like that only happen in movies.’
