Writing Prompt: The bottles were all made of green glass.

Monday has arrived and we are rapidly running out of April. I always feel a bit strange when a month ends and starts mid week. I leave my desk the Friday before with the distinct feeling that I ought to have turned the calendar page over. But it is still April. only two more prompts to go until May and then we’ll have another month’s worth of prompts left. So, let’s get to it.

I like this. The big clear out angle leaves so much room for strange things to be found. Not sure what is coming, but I like that it is wide open with almost any genre I want to choose from.

Monday, April 29th: The bottles were all made of green glass.

The bottles were all made of green glass.  They were lined up on the shelves in neat rows stretching the length of the back wall.  Whoever built the shelves didn’t bother stopping when they came across a window.  There were brackets on either side of each window for extra support, but the shelves cross the window glass as well.  While the windows were dusty, they faced south.  The light poured into the green glass bottles from behind.  The glass glowed and made each window look like a spotlight was placed behind it.

On the dusty floor Jace could see squares of green light stretched out from the light that shone through.  When he was younger he thought that they were magical.  Now as an adult he found himself dismayed that they would soon be gone.  Not only was he here to clear out the warehouse, green glass bottles included, but the building itself was slated for demolition.

Soon the windows as well as the light would be gone.  It was not a battle he could win.  In truth it wasn’t even a battle.  The will was clear cut with no ambiguity.  He was given everything inside the building. His cousin Alex was given the building itself and the land it sat on, while another of their cousins, James, was given the land to either side of the building.

Jace knew their grandfather hoped it would bring them together and make it mor of a family matter.  It took less than two days for James to find a buyer for the land.  The deal was contingent on Alex selling his middle parcel.  He agreed and the deal was signed and sealed before Jace even heard it was a possibility.

The first he heard of it was when he was told he had thirty days to get all of his things off of the property.  He stood there for one long minute, admiring the green light and whoever managed to arrange the shelving on the floor to align the aisles with the windows.  The green light stretched down those eyes.  ‘Like an Emerald Road,’ he thought.

Jace smiled.  The light had always affected his understanding of The Wizard of Oz.  There a yellow brick road led to an Emerald City.  ‘Here the Emerald Road of light leads to,’ As always Jace couldn’t find an end to the sentence.

He heard a sound behind him and realized the team of men he hired to strip out the warehouse arrived.  ‘I guess I’ll never know,’ he thought turning away from the light.
