Writing Prompt: Statues were everywhere.

Morning all. Another fantastic fireworks display by my neighbors last night. I can hardly wait to see what they come up with tomorrow for the actual fourth. But for the moment, my curiosity will have to wait and we will just have to settle in with the morning prompt. So timers set and off we go.

I don’t know what this story is about yet, but I think both the salvage yard and the characters could be fun to play with. Once I figure out the story of course.

Wednesday, July 3rd: Statues were everywhere.

Statues were everywhere.  He knew it was to be expected.  In the architectural salvage yard this was the section where they placed all of the garden decorations.  Somehow he expected urns and birdbaths, perhaps with the odd stone finial carved to look like a pineapple.

He hadn’t expected the vast array of stone dryads, naiads, roman and Greek gods and goddesses, dolphins and shapes.  While he could easily see each one of them gracing a garden somewhere, seeing them all lined up in regimented rows was somehow off putting.

‘Especially as you can see the wear,’ he thought.  Jace didn’t know if they would look more rational if the statues and such were new, but with the wear on them the regimented rows looked utterly bizarre.  This one had the stains of moss on the left side, whale that one was sun bleached.  This one still had a small section of stone balustrade attached to it while the other had a spray of lichen covering a large section of torso.

Seeing that the details brought home how many different places these statues had been.  It felt less like a collection of statues and more like a prison for kidnapped fallen deities.

Jace shook his head.  He met the owner and knew Thomas was a meticulous man.  He liked everything well ordered and often struggled with the oddly shaped salvage brought in for resale.  He inherited the business from his father.  Prior to his death, Thomas had done the books for the shop while his father ran the business.  Then things were arranged more artistically and encouraged people to wander.

‘I’m sure there is a reason beyond Thomas’ desire for order,’ Jace decided.  As he walked down the row, he realized that the statues were placed alphabetically rather than grouped by pantheon. ‘At least I hope there is a reason beyond his need for order.’

Jace found he lost his taste for wandering and chose the three statues he thought would work well for his current project before heading back to the main office to arrange the payment and transportation to the site.  The interior of the shop gave him the same sort of overly organized feel.

‘I rather miss the little vignettes that were arranged,’ he thought. ‘Not my business,’ he thought as he made his way to the counter. His selections were quickly paid for and delivery arranged.  Jace found himself rather relieved to be leaving.  He always liked the shop but now, it seemed as though some of the joy had been sucked out of his visits.

‘Still got what I needed,’ he thought as he tucked the invoices into the folder he had riding in his passenger’s seat.  When he got back to the office the details would be typed in.  For now, he wanted to have a look at the site and see how the work was progressing.
