Writing Prompt: They were here last night.

Good Thursday morning everyone. I hope you are having a great morning. I have a busy one but will soon have some fun news to share. For now, lets just jump into the morning prompt. Timers set and off we go.

Okay this one I am going to be playing around with later today. Fun and creepy.

Thursday, August 15th: They were here last night.

They were here last night.  No one knew but me.  I saw them slip into the barn after darkness fell and was too scared to move.  I held still, half shielded by the curtain and trusting the angle of the newly risen moon to shield me with shadows.  My throat was dry and itchy.  The grass pollen was high and even though I went to bed early, the itchiness woke me and caused me to take many sips from my bedside water glass.

Shortly before they arrived two things happened.  My water glass was empty and my bladder was full.  I took my water glass to the bathroom and set it on the counter while I went to the small closet like space that enclosed the toilet. Dad said it was so someone could use the restroom while someone else was in the shower, but as everyone locked the bathroom door before showering, I had never seen the point.

The bathroom door wasn’t locked due to any peeping on the part of the rest of the humans in the household.  It was due to our Great Dane Chester.  The doors in the old house sat loosely in their frames and he was able to open most of them, nudging them until the latch slipped out of the frame.  Only by locking it could you ensure it would stay closed and that you wouldn’t turn around while naked and covered with suds to find the great Dane sitting at the edge of the shower watching you.

Once I relieved my overly full bladder, I washed my hand and refilled my water glass, hoping it and my late night bathroom break would hold me until morning.  I was facing the window and had to walk closer to it in order to get back in my bad.  That is how I saw them.  The same moonlight that shielded me picked them out as though they were painted in silver.  Even though they couldn’t see me, I was afraid they would see movement.  So I froze in place.

Their look out looked around, even looking up, eyes scanning across the windows at the back of the house.  There was no pause, not recognition of my presence and he followed the others into the barn. When the barn door was closed I slid to the side so that even if anyone were watching I was out of view.  I set my water glass down in it’s accustomed spot and opened the drawer of my night stand to take out the bag Nonna left me.

I knew it was time to use it.

I slipped one of the small charms out of the bag and placed it on the window sill.  I ten moved to the other windows in the room and placed another at each window.  I went to the door and placed one at the base of the door frame.  I then took a deep breath and crept through the house.  Every window, every door received a small silver charm.  I placed them out of sight.

I marked both outside and inside doors.  The charms would keep anything that did not belong out of the house.  If by some means anything gained entry by the front door, they would be trapped in the room they entered, unable to penetrate into the rooms where the others slept. In my brother’s room, Chester saw me, pulled himself up from the floor and sniffed the bag.  He then followed me through the house. Once I was certain even Chester’s door was protected, I returned to my room.  Chester went back to my brother’s room and I could see him stationed by the door.  I was unable to sleep even though I lay back down on the bed.

A few hours later, I thought I heard the rattling of the downstairs doors.  I stayed in bed, listening and too terrified to move lest I be seen. I held the bag of extra charms, now much deflated closed to my chest and prayed they worked.
