The Fifteen Minute Novel 2024: Day 177

The Fifteen Minute Novel is an attempt to take a single prompt and use the last sentence written each day as a start for the next day.  This year I had several prompts circling around a similar story, so I have combined them.  However, the story starts the same way each day, with the last line from the day before and a timer set for fifteen minutes.  The hope is to end up with a complete, if very rough draft by the end of the year.  Some stories are better than others, but I always learn a whole lot about my own writing when I do this so for me it is not only a nice way to work out a story, but it is a tool for helping my writing get better.   And so, we continue this story for 2024 with…

Day 177: When the waiter took their order they started to break down the pros and cons of each job.

When the waiter took their order they started to break down the pros and cons of each job. In addition they broke down the pros and cons of staying at Havers, Ltd or going anyplace else whether it was for one of the offered jobs or not.  In the back of her mind Sophie couldn’t help but wonder about her Monday morning

Thoughts of what Sean could say kept he from focusing too much on her pros and cons list.  She wondered if they would tell her she needed to go ahead and take one of the jobs.  ‘At thins point it would seem like getting rid of me might get rid of trouble.’

“You know we haven’t even mentioned your side business,” Janine said as their shared appetizer was bought.

“As far as I know I am not planning to fire myself,” Sophie said.

Janine smiled.  “Of course not, but you are making a decent amount from the sales.”

“I know,” Sophie said nodding.  “And I love that, so thanks, but I don’t get the benefits I get with the office.  And I di like having a steady pay check.”

“There is something to be said for that,” she said.  “Although there is also something to be said for not having a psycho coworker try to set you on fire.”

“I think she was going for the car not me, and she is a psyche ex-co worker,” Sophie said.  “Technically speaking.”

They finished the pros and cons list and Sophie tucked it away.

“So how is the clothing coming?” Janine asked.

“Pretty good.  I have only a little more to do and then this order will be done.  I’ll probably finish up tomorrow and I have already started drawings for some new items.”

They talked about fashion for a bit and when their dinner came, Sophie decided she had done enough talking about herself.

“So how is it working without the shop?” She asked.  “I didn’t want to pry when you were still getting sorted.”

“Worried I might snap your head off?” Janine asked.

“Mybe a little.”

“It is actually going really well. I don’t want to jinx it but my profits this month were a lot more than they would have been this time last year.  Not paying the rent on the store helps, of course, but not having to worry about the store and physical walk ins helps be focus on the on-line store which has a greater pool of people as well as higher competition.”

“Different marketing?” Sophie asked.

“A bit different, but at least I don; t really have to pay for printing.  Everything is electronic. I still have to  use the graphics designer but he is my cousin and gives me a bit of a discount. And in return I give him the same discount when he is picking out gifts.”

“Sounds like a good plan,” Sophie said.  She picked up her fork.
