Okay feeling a little bit more on track today. And it is always nice to start the day off calmly and not feeling slightly crazed. So deep breath in and off we go into our morning prompts. Ready? Fabulous. Let’s go.
I’m going to have to figure out what he is researching. I am also going to bet that someone will find his research objectionable. Something to think about later.
Thursday, October 24th: The rockslide cut them off from the rest of the world.
The rockslide cut them off from the rest of the world. They could see it from the front windows of the house. The avalanche of snow and rock that streamed into the pass while the earth trembled. The house rocked with the aftershocks, but it had been build to withstand greater earthquakes. A shingle or two slipped off of the roof and when the earth settled someone would be sent up with replacements to nail them into place and to check for any further loose ones. Ian took a moment to feel vindicated in stockpiling extra slate tiles or such an eventuality.
Looking down into the pass, it looked like smoke was momentarily billowing as the fallen snow poofed up and a white cloud before falling back down onto the debris. He stared at it a moment longer and wondered what would become of it. The pass was rarely used any more. The other houses out this way were for the most part abandoned. There were a few people scattered about but they mostly tended to treat the still occupied homes as summer vacation spots rather than places to live. A few of them had been cleaned up and were rented out.
At the moment, his was the only one occupied year round and ass winter se in hard a few weeks prior no one was vacationing in the area. He turned away and went back into the house. With the highway going south of here most people forgot there were houses up here until the summer vacations started. He would always get a few hikers on his property but once they realized the house was occupied they went elsewhere.
He had no fear of going hungry. He was well stocked. In the summer his large garden produced far more than he could eat and he canned, picked and froze the extra. He kept a few animals, predominantly for milk and eggs. He purchased his meat from the butcher in town and when the leaves started to turn he always made certain to stock his freezer. In addition to the butcher shop and the paper wrapped packages he got there, he made deals with hunters, purchasing extra from them and adding venison, duck and rabbit to his store of supplies.
Trueth be told he could live quite comfortably for over a year on what he had stock piled at the house. He wondered if it would take that long for them to clear the pass. ‘At least it means I’ll have quiet for a while.’
He shut the door and walked back inside. In addition to food stuffs he had stock piled his research. Things were always quieter in the winer with fewer daily tasks and so he gathered information like he gathered garden produce and stockpiled it for the cold months as well. The large table in his library was fairly groaning under the weight of books, maps and photocopies.
Ashe wondered if he should make something to eat before delving into his research he heard the phone ring. There were few people who would call and he suspected a call now had more to do with the rockslide filling the pass. He also suspected if he didn’t answer it well meaning people in helicopters would be sent out with medical aid. He picked up the phone and pressed the button to answer the call.
