Morning all. I am hoping for a nice quiet morning and a nice and steady work day. I am not saying that too loud lest I tempt the gods of chaos. So lets quietly jump into the morning prompt. Timers at the ready and off we tiptoe.
I kind of like the set up of the new roommate quest. A lot of room to create outlandish characters.
Wednesday, December 18th: He felt heat creep into his face.
He felt heat creep into his face. He hadn’t thought about him not being alone. “Ahhh, Sorry,” he stammered out and then closed the door, backing out into the hallway. John sighed and shook his head.
John hadn’t suspected Kevin of being home in the first place. He was supposed to be heading out for Christmas with his girlfriend Sarah. John wasn’t sure who the girl was, but he knew it wasn’t Sarah. He thought to find Kevin doing last minute packing.
John retreated to the kitchen and started making his own supper. His bedroom was right across from Kevin’s and he didn’t want to be accused of spying. He thought about leaving but after the day he had, John did not feel like going out again. ‘Besides it is just as much my apartment as his, more so even,’ John thought. Kevin had missed rent last month and John covered him. Ben rolled his eyes and they both agreed that if Kevin couldn’t come up with rent next onth they would find a new roommate in the new year.
While John agreed he doubted Kevin would have January’s rent and also doubted that Ben would be heartless enough to kick Kevin out first thing on New Years Day.
‘Besides we pay rent early and he won’t even be back from Sarah’s until the fifth,’ John thought. He felt his eyes slide towards the hallway. ‘If he is still going to Sarah’s.’
Joh shrugged and turned towards the fridge, taking out the few items he needed to make himself a sandwich. He wasn’t in the mood to rummage through the freezer and see if there were any burritos buried in the frost bitten depths. A sandwich would do.
By the time he as finishing assembling his sandwich and reaching for the knife to cut it in two, Kevin emerged with the girl who wasn’t Sarah. He walked her to the door and sent her on her way, neither looking at John.
Kevin returned and took half of John’s sandwich.
“Thought you would be gone by now,” John said,
“Soon,” he said. “Sarah will be by in,” he tilted to the side to look at the clock on the oven. “About ten minutes.” Kevin grinned and took a bite of the sandwich. “You gonna tell her?” He asked.
There was a hard look in his eyes. “Not my problem,” John said. “But you will need to get rent her before the first,” John said.
Kevin opened his month but John shook his head. “I can’t spot you this month. You still owe me for last month.”
“Oh right,” Kevin said thoughtfully. He took another bite. “I’ll think of something, no worries.” Kevin left the kitchen heading back into his room to gather his gear. He returned to the living room with his bags just as the knock on the door sounded. John looked at the bags Kevin was taking. It looked like more than he would have thought.
Kevin barely gave Sarah time to wave hello across the living room before he was hustling her out the door. He didn’t seem to trust John not to tell her about Kevin’s earlier guest. As Kevin took his bags and Sarah and left, he wondered if Kevin was taking all of his belongings with him and just not planning to return.
‘Possible,’ John thought. Despite what he told Kevin, he could spot the extra month if he had to. He suspected Kevin wouldn’t pay and didn’t want to get on the bad side of their land lord. He suspected that Ben too had money set by for the same reason. If they each paid half of Klevin’s share and then found a new roommate it wouldn’t be bad.
‘Except for the roommate search.’ That had been a nightmare in the past. ‘Which is why we settled on Kevin.’
