The Fifteen Minute Novel 2025: Day 3

This year I am working on a story called Bob vs. The Alien Slug Monsters. Instead of an outline I have a basic list of plot points I want to cover between meeting Bob and sending him off to fight the king of the slugs. There is more of a cast of characters than an actual outline, so we will see how the story develops. And with that intro we continue with Bob Versus the Alien Slug Monsters…

Day 3: Not that he was invited to any wild parties.

Not that he was invited to any wild parties. Bob had never been the sort to be invited to those.  In Highschool he hung with the same group.  They had fun but they never got really wild.  In college he had a different group and again while they went out, it was comparatively tame.  Now he still connected with his high school and college friends mostly through multi-player video games, but as none of them were in the area, a late night gaming session was as wild as they got.

Tonight however he was looking forward to a little more quiet.  This week had been a bit outrageous as far as expense accounts went, Marty had simply been the last in a long line of ‘are you kidding me with this?’ requests. It was nearing the end of the quarter and anyone who was traveling did so more frequently.  It would slow down once the new quarter started, but he knew he had one more week of crazy to go.

The clock ticked over and he heard shuffling outside his office.  Bob heaved a sigh of relief as no one headed towards his office.  They all walked away towards the exit and not to drop off a last second file.  It was always hit or miss at this time of the quarter.  Whith no last second additions, Bob saved the last of his reports and sent them on their way to corporate.  They wouldn’t be read until Monday at the earliest, but he was done. Anything else would be filed in the new quarter.

He logged out of his computer, gathered the few things he needed and made his escape.  As always he reached Friday with the feeling that he was escaping.  He had never envisioned his life like this.  ‘But work is work,’ he said.  He always thought he would just get a boring office job and once he clocked out at the end of the day life his life in the off hours.

Yet he hadn’t counted on the crazies in the office and the fact that by the time the day ended he simply didn’t want to do anything.  ‘Always the weekend,’ he told himself as he left the office and headed to his car.

He unlocked it and slid behind the wheel knowing that was a lie as well.  Tonight he would indulge himself in take out, limited because his doctor started making comments about salt intake, valves and arteries during his last physical.  In the morning he would get up and do all of the chores that needed doing around the house.  ‘Including the yard.’

Bob shook his head.  He would have to time his yard work.  Given the weather there was a chance his neighbors would be out as well.  Over all he didn’t mind them.  In fact he liked them a lot better than his coworkers.  They were a different breed of crazy that somehow he didn’t find annoying.  ‘Or not too annoying.’

Bob shrugged.
