The Fifteen Minute Novel 2025: Day 7

This year I am working on a story called Bob vs. The Alien Slug Monsters. Instead of an outline I have a basic list of plot points I want to cover between meeting Bob and sending him off to fight the king of the slugs. There is more of a cast of characters than an actual outline, so we will see how the story develops. And with that intro we continue with Bob Versus the Alien Slug Monsters…

Day 7: Eddie had a different method of neighborhood organization.

Eddie had a different method of neighborhood organization. He tended to think of it more in terms of military quadrants.  Eddie was very into military sorts of things.  He always word camo pants and for some reason a blue t-shirt.  The t-shirt was a robin’s egg blue and didn’t seem very regulation to Bob.

Whenever he asked about it, Eddie tilted his head slightly and wiggled his eyebrows he then tapped a finger to his lips.  Bob was certain he meant the actions to convey some sort of secret meaning to the blue shirt.  Bob wasn’t sure there actually was one outside of Eddie’s mind.  He, after the first time asking, went on an internet search to see if anything came up.  Nothing did.

Eddie was also similarity suspect with his responses when Bob asked him about his military service.  Thus far, Bob had not even been able to find the branch where Eddie might have served.  While Bob was willing to admit that it might be covert or something Eddie didn’t want to actually think too much about, he was beginning to suspect that Eddie hadn’t actually served anywhere but simply had a fondness for the military and military-esque things.

Bob shook the thought away as Enid told him about the meteor shower that was supposed to be visible over their town during the weekend.

“It will be quite spectacular,” Enid said.  “I think Genghis and I will take a deck chair and a thermos out to the strip sidewalk at the end of the block, away rom all the lights to watch the show.  You are welcome to join,” she said.

Genghis tilted his head and stared up at Bob as though wondering if he was planning to invade their meteor watching excursion or not.  Bob opened his mouth to frame a polite refusal but before any words could escape a loud explosion sounded.  The sound deafened and took all three of them by surprise.  Gengis recovered first, spinning around on his leash a few times before arrowing in on a location and barking wildly in it’s general direction.  The springs were back in his feet but this time Bob was not the target.   He could see a plume of smoke rising over the trees.

They saw smoke rising but debris flung far and wide.  None of it reached their houses as their block was behind the curve.

“Oh dear,” Enid said.  “Was that the bridge?”

Bob blinked and realized she was right.  The explosion came from where the bridge would be located.

“I think so,” he said.  As they watched they saw a running figure heading towards them.  Bob braced but then he recognized the sky blue shirt and camouflaged pants.  Eddie.

They watched as Eddie legged it down the street.  His face was pale with a swipe of soot across his left cheek.  He had a maniacal grin on his face and seemed on the verge of giggling to himself.  Then he caught sight of them standing there, Genghis bouncing and barking excitedly.  His grin fell and he tugged his shirt straight.
