The Fifteen Minute Novel 2025: Day 11

This year I am working on a story called Bob vs. The Alien Slug Monsters. Instead of an outline I have a basic list of plot points I want to cover between meeting Bob and sending him off to fight the king of the slugs. There is more of a cast of characters than an actual outline, so we will see how the story develops. And with that intro we continue with Bob Versus the Alien Slug Monsters…

Day 11: Bob sighed heavily and flung off the blanket he pulled over himself in the night.

Bob sighed heavily and flung off the blanket he pulled over himself in the night. ‘If I get up and go I’ll have groceries and not have to think about the bridge until Monday,’ he told himself.  Bob sat up and went to the bathroom.  He then took out fresh clothes, peeled off the ones he slept in and took a shower.  As he bathed, Bob thought through the items he would need for the week.

‘If I go early I can pick up breakfast first, then shop, and then maybe pick up lunch out,’ he thought.  He knew if he ate a big breakfast and lunch he could skip dinner.  ‘And I think Keith is planning on gaming tonight.’ Bob smiled.  It was a win win for him even if he did have to deal with the bridge being out.

“Which will add more time and make lunch almost an early dinner by the time I get back.” It wasn’t ideal but he could do nothing about the bridge or Eddie’s penchant for blowing things up.

As Bob dressed he thought about the bridge.  While he knew Eddie probably caused some damage and he wouldn’t feel comfortable driving on it for a while, he did wonder just how bad the damage was.  “Maybe I will go look before I go shopping,” he decided.  Dressed for a day of getting groceries and fast food, Bob opened his door, locked it behind him and stuck his keys in his back pocket.  He already had his wallet on him so after he checked out the bridge he could walk back and get into his car to go.  As he stepped out he heard furious barking.  Bob looked over and Enid complete with the bouncing Genghis was just leaving the house as well.

“We were just going to go for our morning walk,” Enid told him.  She looked at Bob and the direction he was facing. “Going to look at the bridge damage?” she asked.

“I am,” Bob confirmed.  The pair walked over and Genghis decided he would rather walk than bounce.,  He seemed resigned to Bob’s presence on said walk and even though he still favored Bob with the evil eye, he stopped barking.

“I am too,” Enid said.  “You know it is the strangest thing,” she confessed as they began walking towards the bend in the road that would take them to the bridge.  There was no fear of traffic yet they walked on the sidewalk.  Bob liked to believe it was more for Genghis’ benefit as he got to sniff the trees bushes and grass, but he knew that even though there would be no traffic, he would stick to the sidewalk.  Walking in the center of the road just felt like he had completely given up on this being a neighborhood.

“I had dreams of more explosions in the night,” Enid confessed.  “I wouldn’t have heard them of course, I take my hearing aid out before bed.  But I had the feeling that something blew up.”

“Like vibrations?” Bob asked.

“Almost I suppose.  “You don’t suppose Eddie decided to do more damage after dark, do you?  I know he promised to stop all together but we both know he only holds to that promise for a few days at best.  Still he does usually hold to it a few days.”

“True, but I had dreams about explosions too,” he confessed.

The two of them reached the curve in the road.  From here they could see the end of the bridge.  It looked as it always had but that was also because of the angle of the land.  They would have to get closer to see any damage.
