The Fifteen Minute Novel 2025: Day 17

This year I am working on a story called Bob vs. The Alien Slug Monsters. Instead of an outline I have a basic list of plot points I want to cover between meeting Bob and sending him off to fight the king of the slugs. There is more of a cast of characters than an actual outline, so we will see how the story develops. And with that intro we continue with Bob Versus the Alien Slug Monsters…

Day 17: Did he want to walk into whatever was going on with both of them and a Pomeranian?

Did he want to walk into whatever was going on with both of them and a Pomeranian? Bob wasn’t so sure that was the best chance he had of finding anything out.  Currently the two of them were arguing over divine radio broadcasts.  While he knew it was nerves about the unknown making them talk now, he also knew that in the time he had known them neither had managed to go ten minutes without picking some sort of argument with each other.

It didn’t seem like a good combination for an investigation mission. ‘Not that I was planning on anything but a breakfast and grocery mission,’ Bob thought.  He thought through the situation.  They obviously couldn’t stay here and they wouldn’t find out anything if they went back home.  ‘We’d just have to start out again to go to town to find out.’

He knew that would be another group outing.  He suspected if he drove home neither would get out of the car and both would insist on coming with him. At the thought of a group outing, Bob thought of the small bus that occasionally picked up Enid.  It was from a group home.

“Enid,” Bob said, interrupting the divine radio discussion.  “You have friends at the Golden Meadows, retirement community, right?”

“I do,” Enid said.  “You aren’t thinking of sending me to a home so Eddie can blow up my house are you?”

“I bet it would go up easily,” Eddie said.

“Hush,” Enid told him.

“It’s on this side of the river isn’t it?” Bob asked.

“Oh yes,” Enid replied.  It’s on the other side of the old ball park, the one they closed when all this renovation started.  That’s why they can pick me up.  It’s still a ways away but Gene, the driver lives not too far from our bridge.  He picks me up and then goes to get the rest of them.  Nice man Gene.  He won’t be able to get to me now.”  She looked at Eddie.

“We can still get to Golden Meadows though,” Bob said.  And we can get there without going into town.  They might have more information,” Bob said.

“Sure,” Eddie said nodded.  “They’ve gotta keep notified of emergencies and all.”

“I think maybe we will stop there and see if we can find out what is going on,” Bob said.  “Maybe a transformer blew and no one told us.”

Bob wasn’t certain what sort of transformer would take out their bridge along with causing issues in town and blocking radio signals but it was the best he could think of at the moment. ‘And driving to the retirement community seems a bit safer than just driving straight into town.  Bob may not be certain exactly what was going on in Centerville but he had a bad feeling.

With a destination in mind, Bob felt a little bit better.  He took the car out of park and pulled back onto the road.  This time, although he stopped at the stop sign, he made it a rolling stop.  All open spaces made him feel a bit like a rabbit with a circling hawk.  Under the cover of trees felt safer to him.  It wasn’t something he wanted to explain, but luckily, no one asked.
