This year I am working on a story called Bob vs. The Alien Slug Monsters. Instead of an outline I have a basic list of plot points I want to cover between meeting Bob and sending him off to fight the king of the slugs. There is more of a cast of characters than an actual outline, so we will see how the story develops. And with that intro we continue with Bob Versus the Alien Slug Monsters…
Day 23: Bob looked over and saw several faces peering out at their little group from different windows.
Bob looked over and saw several faces peering out at their little group from different windows. He waved at one of the windows and the curtain twitched back into place, concealing the face behind it. “Did you decide to go on your recon mission alone or were there people who knew you were going?” Bob asked.
“We got together and decided something needed to be done and I decided to go,” Herman said. “Why?
“The others don’t seem to want to get together,” Bob said.
“Oh they’re just worried,” Herman said waving them off.
As Bob was worried himself he couldn’t blame them.
“They are used to a set schedule,” Endi said patting him on the shoulder. “Very routine driven here.”
“Right,” Bob said. “Well while you tell people about the bridge, if they want to talk to you, I am going to have a look at the road and then see if I can get in the building.”
“Why?” Herman asked. “No one is in the building, we checked.”
“But they might have an emergency radio,” Bob said.
“But we couldn’t get any radio stations on the way in,” Eddie said.
“For calling out, not listening,” Bib said. “Like if the staff have to call ambulances for the residence or something.”
“Oh,” Eddie said. “That makes sense.”
“Anyone coming with me?” Bob asked. “ There were a lot of head shakings, even from Eddie. Bob was surprised as he thought Eddie might want to see a road that had been blown up given his love of explosives. Bob shrugged.
“Okay then, just see if everyone is okay and if they heard anything.”
“Half the people hear are deaf as posts,” Enid told him,. “But we’ll check.”
“I meant if anyone had been by with informat…you know what, never mind,” he told them. Bob left them at Hermans little house and followed the path towards the back of the main building. He followed the side walk. He knew it was more of a recon mission than anything else but the flowerbeds and well clipped sections of grass practically begged him to stick to the sidewalks.
He followed the path to the back of the building and tried the door. It was locked. He walked over to the window and peered inside, careful to step around the purple petunias planted in the open ground under the window. If he could get away without crushing any flowers he would be happy.
Bob saw what he expected to see when he peered inside. A darkened room with an empty welcome desk. He could see a light flashing and he assumed some sort of security system was on. Bob stepped back and navigated his way back through the pansies and to the path. He chewed his lip as he walked around the building. ‘If we trigger the alarm it will sound and then maybe someone official will be sent. He tried to remember anything he might have heard about the alarm but couldn’t think of anything. If he was told, then he forgot.
“If it is a silent alarm it would just ring at the security office and the police station,” Bob mused. “If it is not silent then it would just go off here.” He wasn’t sure making a lot of noise was a good idea. “But if it is silent than triggering it would be a good plan to let someone know we needed help. Bob eased around the side of the building and realized he hadn’t tried calling anyone for help. They tested the radio but not the cell phone. Bob stopped and took his phone out of his pocket. He had no service. He tried dialing 911 anyway hoping there was a possibility emergency calls would go through. Nothing happened. He shut down the phone and slipped it back into his pocket. Whatever took out the radios seemed to have taken out the cell phones.
“So much for calling the cavalry,” he said as he continued walking. “I suppose that makes me the cavalry.”
Bob reached the front corner of the building.
