Events are fun things in writing. They take your character out of their every day and allow you to show them in a different light. Sometimes it is a facet of their personality that you can show. Sometimes it enables you to share a memory that made the character the way they are. Other times the different event shakes something lose inside your character and gives them a new thought. It could solve a mystery or show them a side of another character, providing insight into a situation they might not have otherwise seen.
For this exercise you can take a character you have worked with before or invent one solely for this exercise. But the point is to show them out of their everyday world. So picture your character and how they normally behave, maybe adding a few sentences or even a scene showing them in ‘normal mode’ then once you know the usual behavior, send them into the event.
Today’s event: A dance.
This can be a school dance they are attending or even chaperoning. It could be a grand ball where someone is trying to get them introduced to eligible partners. They can delight in the break from the norm or be there reluctantly. They can even be there against their better judgment or for some reason other than actually attending the dance. Perhaps they are there to watch someone who is out of their normal element. It is your call, but use the event as a break from normal behavior and see how it can be useful to you. Happy Writing.
