Morning, time to clear the brain for the day ahead. Fifteen minutes if you have them.
I’ve toyed with this idea before in morning prompts. Need to gather the similar ones and see if I can find a cohesive story.
Thursday, March 13th: Change was coming.
Change was coming. Sean wasn’t entirely certain how the others would deal with it. He stared at the clock. Three minutes until midnight. When pm turned to Am his birthday would be here. He would be of legal age. He wondered if the others even remembered it was his birthday. Or that it was an official one.
He doubted it. He had step brothers who were older who always looked at him as much younger, mostly because while he had the height, he lacked the mass they boasted. He was slender where as they were naturally bulkier and spent long hours in the gym increasing that bulk. None would ever call them fat, but they were substantial. Sean also had step brothers who were younger. They too were larger than he was. It was often forgotten that he was older than they were.
‘And it has been years since anyone remembered my birthday.’
He shrugged off the annoyance. There was no changing things.
He felt his eyes slipped closed and drifted off.
When he woke the sun was just rising. There were eight minutes before his alarm went off. He was disinclined to go back to sleep and turned the alarm off. He stretched and felt more rested than he expected. He hadn’t expected he would be able to sleep. Sean went to the bathroom. He relieved himself, and took advantage of his eight minute head start to shower. He went back to his room and dressed as the others tumbled out of their rooms to begin their day.
Sean dressed as though it was any other day and when he went down he took only his school bag. Anything else he was taking with him had already been forwarded. The school bag caused no notice. His school had in fact let out over a week prior. He had in fact gone to his graduation. The school the younger boys attended were still conducting finals. No one noticed his graduation or knew that he no longer had classes.
Breakfast was as always, quick and chaotic. Cereal was poured and there was jockeying for everyone to get what they wanted. Sean made do with a pop tart. It wasn’t a flavor the others liked so it remained uncontested. There was a mass exodus as everyone went their way. No one looked in his direction as he headed off towards the direction of his school. He felt his steps get lighter as he walked.
He wasn’t coming back.
Sean smiled. That was the best birthday present he ever received.
He spent a lot of time arranging things. He had the job and housing lined up and waiting. Today, before he left town he would go to his bank and now that he was of age, he would shut down the account set up by his father and transfer his savings into an account solely under his own control in a different bank.
Sean tried not to frown as he thought of it. The account was set up because Sean noticed that occasionally cash would go missing from his room.
