The Fifteen Minute Novel 2025: Day 55

This year I am working on a story called Bob vs. The Alien Slug Monsters. Instead of an outline I have a basic list of plot points I want to cover between meeting Bob and sending him off to fight the king of the slugs. There is more of a cast of characters than an actual outline, so we will see how the story develops. And with that intro we continue with Bob Versus the Alien Slug Monsters…

Day 55: One of the slugs stopped his disk in front of Lucille.

One of the slugs stopped his disk in front of Lucille. There was no thought, no stopping to think. As the slug slipped off his jacket, Bob leaped from behind the planter and threw one of the hand fulls of salt at him.  The slug squealed in pain as the salt hit and before the second slug could react, Bob threw the second hand full of salt at the second slug.  He reached back into his bag for the container of salt, but found it was unnecessary.  He hit both slugs in the head and they were each melting into piles of goo. The disks seemed to catch the goo like bowls.  Bob worried about someone hearing the screech of the first slug and darted back to his hiding place behind the planter.

His heart pounded in his chest and he tried to catch his breath.  He felt his eyes widen and he tried not to hyperventilate.  He hadn’t meant to attack the slugs.  He hadn’t actually had a thought run through his head.  He simply saw the slug go for Lucille and acted before his brain caught up.  Bob filled both his hands with salt again and waited.

Night had truly fallen now and darkness fell around him.  It was only the streetlights keeping it at bay.   He waited, trying to listen for the sounds of someone investigating the shrieking slug. He heard nothing beyond the soft whine of the two disks of the fallen slugs.

It didn’t seem as though the slugs scream was heard.  ‘Might be best to get the disks away in case anyone misses them and comes looking.   Bob peered out from behind the planter.  Nothing was moving except for the two disks.  They seemed to sway in place, the slugs he hit with the salt dissolved into gelatinous piles. He could vaguely pick out the written insignia on the jackets.  Bob eased his way around the planter.

Getting the disks away seemed like a good plan.  His hands were still full of salt so he took one hand full and sprinkled it over Lucille.  From watching he knew the slug would have to climb on her before it possessed her.  If it did, he holed it dissolved before it could.  Needing to get rid of the second hand full, he sprinkled it over Enid and Genghis, making sure the dog received the salty protection as well.

It wasn’t much but it was what he could do at the moment.

Hating being out in the open, Bob moved to the disks.  A gentle push had them gilding through the air.  Bob decided that behind the dumpster was as good a place as any.  He pushed the two disks thought the air as fast as he was able.  They didn’t seem to want to move as fat as he wanted to run, so he was reduced to a fast walk rather than a run.

As he moved, Bob could feel his heart beating in his throat.  ‘I can let go and grab more salt if I hear anything.’ He told himself.  Bob eased himself around the dumpster and made certain the disks were hidden behind.  He gave them a hard shove and watched them drift slowly down the alleyway.

Bob hid himself behind the dumpster and waited for a moment.  Still nothing moved.  No one came to investigate the screams.  His heart stopped thumping as wildly.  His breath steadied.
