Ah the first write in of a new month. While we concentrated on weather and how it could affect your setting and mood for your story in March, in April we are going to concentrate on descriptions. Specifically of Objects. Many times when we are writing a story an object can become important. It could be an item of religious significance. It could be a token of love, a dire warning or the clue that your sleuth needs to find to solve the mystery.
Today we have a sword.

Perhaps you are writing a pirate tale, perhaps this is a museum piece. How your character encounters this item is going to play a role. Perhaps a pirate turned politician keeps it as a reminder, leaving the notches to remind him of the last battle before he retired. Perhaps it was found near the scene of an attack, whether modern, historical or fantastical and the details lead to the name of the attacker. Maybe the decorative but by the hilt corresponds to a treasure map.
The story is yours to figure out, but for this exercise try to describe this sword (and perhaps the pillow) in as great a detail as you can. In your tale the number of notches can be as important as the design. The goal is to practice your descriptions, whatever story you plan to tell.
As Always, Happy writing.
