Tuesday, April 8th: Emotion

Good morning and welcome to Tuesday’s writing exercise. As it is Tuesday we are looking at Emotions. And today I have a fun one. Well a fun one to practice writing, not so much to actually feel. But lets get to it…

Today’s emotion: Torn

I love this one. One character having to make a choice between two equally important things. The possibilities for drama ae inherent in the emotion. Especially since it doesn’t have to be a world shattering kind of event. It can a choice between going to the movies or not. The character could be torn between not wanting to see the movie and wanting to spend time with friends who do want to see it. They could have other plans they would have to put on hold to see the movie. And of course even with something like this you can up the stakes. Perhaps this is more than a movie night but an invitation to join a group, the last time they will try to get your character to go with them, or maybe it is a group your character wants to avoid. Whatever it is and however high the stakes you want, the rules of the exercise remain the same. Show a character dealing with the emotion without actually mentioning the emotion by name in your writing.

As always, happy writing.
