Wednesday, April 9th: Object Description

Good morning and welcome to the Wednesday writing exercise. Through out April we are focusing on describing objects. Descriptions are always important to your story, otherwise those reading can’t see what is in your head. This month we are focusing on describing singular objects. But it is more than just writing what the objects look like. For these exercises we are also giving them some level of importance. Maybe you are writing a mystery and the object provides a clue to solving it. Maybe you are writing a fantasy novel and this object provides insight into the religion you have created for your world or even conveys the right of kingship. Maybe the metals or stones used to create the item speak of trade networks or a person’s place in society.

Below is a picture of the object we are going to look at for today’s exercise. When you write a description think not only about the object and how it appears but what it means in your story (or the one you made up for this exercise) and use your description to not only convey a visual for your readers but a meaning as well.

As always, Happy Writing.
