Ah yes, we’ve reached the event of the week and this one is a little different. Possibly. Depending on how you write it. But we will get to that. First off it is an event, and in writing events are very useful things for causing a shift in perspective. It can show a different side of your character or it can provide your character with insight as they look at the world slightly differently due to the event shifting normal behavior. It can also tell you a lot about a town or a culture. Today’s event also has an added dimension, depending on what character you use and their perspective. So…
Today’s Event: A bike race.
Now with a bike race you have the usual shift in perspective as a person attends the event and watches the race. But what if they are one of the organizers? Or someone who has spent all year training for this event? While it is also a grand event that can take over a town, you also get winners and losers. which makes it a little different than most holiday type events, or even oil changes. So before you sit down to write this event, choose your character, decide why they are at this event and how hey are going to interact with it. Do they love it or hate it? Are they an observer or an active participant? Are they watching the race or watching the people watching the race? Is this the height of victory, the despair of defeat or are they the person who has to clean up all the confetti when the crowds are gone?
Pick your perspective and see how the event can play into the story you want to tell. And as always, happy writing.
