It is may and as always the Wednesdays have a theme. For May I chose food. When writing, food is a great tool. It can show a bit of the culture. There is the what people are eating to play with. You can show their economic level by what forms of food. You can show the social norms and manners regarding food. You can even show elements of religion. Food can also bring a scene to life and make it feel real to the reader in a host of different ways. So this month we are going to look at different meals. You can choose one culture to present these meals throughout the month or different ones. If you are in the middle of writing you can use the same character in different scenarios or different characters. The point is to think about how the use of food can enhance your story.
So today’s meal is: A simple everyday meal.
This is the typical food your character or a family would eat in the word you are creating.
Start with one character and one meal.
Then think about the different points of that character’s life. How does that simple everyday meal change? Does your character get richer or poorer thus affecting what is on the plate? Are their famines in the area or an expansion of trade bringing new items from distant shores? Let us see the change in that meal over time.
If you are world building than in addition to the one character, show us the everyday meal of people from different economic levels, or different regions, or even religions. Think about how your world is set up and how that effects what makes it onto the plates of the characters.
