Morning all. We have rain, rain and after a break around noon, more rain predicted. It looks like it is shaping up to be a pretty soggy day here. Given there will be a point in the next few months where I will no doubt be breaking out the rain dance gear in an effort to beg for moisture for my parched garden I won’t complain too much, but with rain here it seems either feast or famine. Either we are bone dry with cracked earth or I am contemplating building an arc. We haven’t reached the arc stage yet, but I may be researching cubits later this afternoon. For now, the morning prompt. Timers set and off we go.
I kind of like this. A hidden person, death to those providing cover, could be interesting to play with.
Tuesday, May 20th: I imagine it is a lot to take in.
“I imagine it is a lot to take in,” Sarah said. Lucy smiled wanly and nodded. To say it was a lot was a gross understatement. In less than twelve hours she had lost her home and the only family she ever knew, found out that they weren’t in fact her family and were in fact hiding her from people who wanted to kill her.
‘Seriously,’ Lucy thought as she followed Sarah around the campus. ‘Who would want to kill me?’ The thought was ridiculous. Even her arch nemesis, Farrah from her old school didn’t want to kill her, just make her sick so she couldn’t compete in the annual science fair. As Sarah pointed out the buildings and offered a brief explanation of what was housed within, Lucy realized that this year, Farrah would get her way. Lucy would not be competing with her for first prize. At their school they were each other’s only real competition. In every competition their school held with regards to science one of them always took first and the other second. It was always a toss up as to who would be first though and it pushed each of them to work harder and get more creative.
‘Now Farrah will be able to skate through.’
Lucy found the absence of her old nemesis a little disappointing.
‘But now I’ve got people who are trying to kill me.’ It was something she was trying to avoid thinking about. She did promise that she would remain on campus for her own safety while others looked for those who wanted her dead. Her identity was still a secret. No one, including herself, knew who her real family was or what her birth name was.
‘Well someone knows,’ Lucy thought as she nodded at Sarah’s description of some of the amenities in the rec hall. ‘They just aren’t telling me.’
She frowned. It seemed like they didn’t trust her to keep her own secrets. She wasn’t told her name for fear she might let the secret slip. ‘Or maybe go on an investigation.’ From talking to the others it seemed they viewed her as some sort of amateur sleuth in the making, running off to investigate as soon as she had details. She liked to think she wasn’t an idiot. She suspected that if she did look up her name and family then it might signal someone somewhere that someone here was looking into it.
‘Which might bring the people with the guns back.’
Lucy shivered. The memory of that night was still bright and sharp. It hurt more than she thought anything could before. They may not have been her blood, but they were her family. She blinked away tears and tried to concentrate on Sarah’s words as they entered one of the main buildings in the complex. The plaque by the door stated Rogers, nothing more.
“This is the main dormitory,” Sarah said. “Your room is on the third floor, across the hall from mine actually,” Sarah paused and smiled as she tugged the door open. “It’s a pretty good set up. While we have to share the main shower and bathrooms on each floor, each room comes with its own small sink, so you don’t have to fight for space to brush your teeth or put on makeup or anything. That you can do in you room.”
“Great,” Lucy replied.
“The elevators are notoriously wonky so we generally use the stairs.” Sarah pointed out the elevators and then walked Lucy to the stairs. They climbed the three flights needed and stepped out onto the floor. It was a long corridor lined with doors.
