Writing Prompt: This is not the way I planned it.

Morning all and welcome to Wednesday. Shall we see what sort of story ideas the mid week prompt brings? Timers at the ready and off we go.

Odd, I was certain this sentence would lead to a botched murder when I started. Admittedly is still might,. Too early to tell…

Wednesday, May 28th: This is not the way I planned it.

‘This is not the way I planned it,’ Carl thought.  He sighed.  His path took hm across the lake.  From here he could see the resort in all it’s glory.  He saw the tastefully lit outdoor dining area.  The lights just starting to come on as the sun faded.  There was also of course the sunset.  It bathed the entire area in a red gold glow.  The lake itself seemed a deeper blue because of it.  The path he was on was lit by low placed solar lights so that no one needed to pay too much attention to the path.  As the shadows grew tese flicked on, a warm buttery glow at his feet to light his way.  He saw one of the benches.  It had flowering plants placed around it making it the perfect place for a couple to sit.

Thankfully there were no trysting couples in sight.  He didn’t think he could handle that at the moment.  Carl walked over to the bench and sat down.  His gaze once more strayed to the resort.  From here, the plantings framed the view a though he was looking at a live action painting.  He could see couples moving about, but thankfully he was too far away to make out any details.

He allowed himself another sigh.  He planned a romantic trip. An escape.  He thought it would be good for them.  While Sarah had been drifting from him, he thought that it was just because things had been so busy.  They had been dating a while and while they kept things casual, he wanted to make things more official, to declare them a couple, closing the open ended nature of their relationship.

Not that it was really open in anything but name.  He wasn’t seeing anyone, really didn’t have tome to even try seeing anyone even if he had the desire.  He knew she was just as busy.  He hoped that this get away would be good for them.  They could solidify themselves as a couple.

‘But it spiraled.’

He wasn’t entirely certain how.  When they were discussing the trip, there were others around.  Several of them decided the resort was too splendid to miss.  ‘But they were couples as well.’

Carl thought somehow that this would help solidify them as a couple in the minds of others.  They were a couple going on a couples vacation with other couples.

Somehow it didn’t work out that way.  They arrived and somehow Carl ended up alone.  There were various activities and he thought some of them he and Sarah would do together but that seemed not to be the case.  He hadn’t even managed to eat dinner with her on a single night since they had been here.  Thinking they should at least talk about syncing up their schedules for a meal he went in search of her.

He ended up eavesdropping a conversation not meant for his ears.  The words stung, but the meaning was what mattered.  Sarah didn’t want to be with him anymore.  Hadn’t in a while from what he gathered.  She liked the trip but wasn’t keen on him.

‘It wasn’t at all how I planned this,’ he thought.
