Wednesday, July 9th: Write in

It is time once again to focus on our descriptions with a little potential world building thrown in. This month we are looing at religious objects. They can be for a religion you made up or one that is currently practicing. If you feel the need to skip the religious angle, that is fine, just make certain to imbue your object with significance beyond an every day item. The goal is to not only describe the item but to use it as an entry point into the significance of the item to the story.

This is about the special. Is this an item every practitioner of this religion recognizes and it stands for something within the faith, or is this a special version of something like a saintly relic, or an object once owned by a famous orator. It can be special within the faith and used to explain the workings of the religion you are creating. It can be special and slightly different than other churches, temples, alters, etc have or it could have special significance to your main character. (the specific item that was used when he/she…).

How you use the item is up to you of course. It could me a murder weapon used because the murderer places special significance on it. Whatever genre you write or if you choose to leave religion out of it, give this item significance beyond itself as an object. Describe it, and it’s placement in the world you are creating, whatever world that happens to be.

Today’s Object: A golden bowl

The details, like the story and significance are yours to create. Plain and simple, gem encrusted and highly embossed are all your call. Have fun with it and let your imagination go. Just make it significant. And as always, happy writing.
