Morning all. Ready to jump into our mid week prompt? How did the first of the week speed by so fast? Timers set and lets start the second half.
I somehow suspect George is going to make a menace of himself.
Wednesday, August 13th: It was going badly.
It was going badly. Erin could feel it as though the world actually tilted and was trying to slide her out towards the door. Kerry seemed determined. Erin had been friends with Kerry since grade school. Somehow they remained friends. Kerry had never been without a boyfriend for more than a few days and after Erin’s break up from the notorious and never to be mentioned again Travis, Kerry had been stunned when Erin decided to bypass dating for a while.
She just crossed dating off the to do list and concentrated on other things. Kerry knew the hurt caused by Travis went deep so she let Erin be. For a while at least. The fact that Erin was moving on with her life and yet still not dating bothered Kerry. Erin kept telling her she would date when he opportunity arose but she wasn’t looking for anyone. Kerry insisted that a person made their own opportunities and insisted that Wally, her current boyfriend, had some very nice single friends.
As Erin wasn’t too enthused by Wally the thought of his friends did not fill her with excitement. Erin tried putting Kerry off. It worked for a while. Erin hadn’t realized Kerry would stage an ambush, thus resulting in tonight’s surprise double date. Wally’s friend was named George.
They were all sitting in a booth at the diner they all tended to frequent periodically so there was at least an element of familiarity. Erin was surprised by the dating ambush but recovered well. As she grew up in a house full of surprises, some rather awkward she had a lot of practice. She was fairly certain Kerry was counting on that.
George was not a person who would be Erin’s first choice. They had very little in common and Erin struggled to find mutual ground. He did like to pontificate quite a bit and made grand statements encompassing his beliefs about much of humanity during the meal. Wally nodded in agreement, occasionally interjecting a comment. Erin was quietly polite and trying to resist looking at her watch. Kerry’s smile went from brightly optimistic to slightly strained. The check came and Erin insisted on paying her share. George nodded and accepted. He even seemed pleased. As it was the closest thing to agreement they had during the evening Erin found it a little sad.
“We should definitely do this again, now that we’ve been introduced,” George said as they all exited the booth. Erin murmured something polite that was neither encouraging nor discouraging, but George had already turned to Wally to resume his conversation. Kerry fell back with Erin as they all walked out of the door.
“I’m sorry,” Kerry whispered.
“Just for the love of all that is holy do not give him my number,” Erin replied. Kerry nodded vehemently before they all split up to go their own ways.
