Good morning everyone. This August we are focusing on sporting descriptions. I know some of you aren’t enthused by sports while others adore it. But regardless of opinion, it is a great way to show things about the society in which your story is placed. Today is an especially fun one. Remember that while we are describing the sport’s related ‘item’ we are also using it as a vehicle to start world building. Which this one lends itself well to.
Today’s Sport topic: Referee
I know it is a person not an item but it does provide a unique way of showing the world. There are the rules of whatever sport is being portrayed that the referee has to enforce. There are the punishments to be doled out. And while this does tell us about the sport, it can also tell us about the people who created it. It lends it self into how those people think of things like fair play and the violation of rules. Even how they treat the referee will tell you something. And because as a writer your story often takes place when things are changing, perhaps the sport can reflect that. Something once allowed is now banned. A rule breaking that was once punished is now ignored.
\There is much to play with and while you may start with the physical description of the referee work on branching out and using it a a window into not just the game but the people playing it. As always, happy writing.
