Good morning and welcome to the first of the September themed description writing exercises. I am kind of tickled by this one and I thought it was kind of timely given that it was September. This month we are looking at first school days. Let’s jump in.
Today’s First: The First Day of Kindergarten
That’s right this month we are looking at school days. So Today we start with kindergarten. You can write this from any perspective of course. A parent dropping your oldest child off for school the first time, or your youngest. It could be you attending your first day or a new teacher, a retiring on on the final year. Pick a position and go with it. Think of all the different emotions you can add to the scene along with the physicality. And with these we also lean into world building. So let this lead you into the world of your story. It could be a way to show the family, society, the educational system. Or if it is a world somehow not our own (future, past, different planet, or so many other options) use this to show the differences between what we might think of as typical in a kindergarten and what this one is. Will little Bobby learn to waltz or learn to operate an air lock? So think about your world and focus on your scene’s description as a way to bring the reader into it. And as always, Happy writing.
