Morning all, I hope you had a fabulous weekend. We have started on the annual fall air out the house and clear out accumulated junk before the winter arrives set of chores. There was a lot of, do we need this asked this weekend followed by a donation to the local Amvets. Productive, and space clearing but also a bit more of a workout than planned. Lots of bending and squatting and lifting. So a bit sore, but feeling good. And ready to jump into Monday, ready to go? Excellent, timers set for fifteen minutes.
Oh I kind of like this. Someone is trying to poison Danny and we will need to figure out why. Fun. Well not for Danny of course…
Monday, September 15th: He sniffed the air.
He sniffed the air. There was a strange scent to it. ‘Like overheated metal,’ he thought. Frowning he set his coffee mug down on the rail of the back porch and stepped away. He doubted his coffee was giving off the scent bit he wanted to step away to be sure.
Danny stepped off the porch and into the yard. In inhaled deeply. Fresh air, dew draped grass. He didn’t need to look down to feel the dew from his footsteps soaking into his sneakers. He frowned, no longer smelling the scent.
He walked back to the porch and shook the loose drops off of his shoes. It was a pointless effort as anything he touched soaked into the canvas. He shrugged. He wasn’t going anywhere today. Or if he did decide to leave the house it would be later. Once he went back inside, he could kick off the shoes put on fresh socks and be fine. The shoes would dry fairly quickly.
Stepping back on the porch the metallic scent returned. His frown deepened as he wondered if something on the house was burning and he didn’t know it. ‘It doesn’t smell like overheated wires.;
He closed his eyes and drew in breath. He angled his head towards the scent and opened his eyes. He was looking at his coffee cup. He poured the cup from the pot only moments before stepping outside. Normally he would have just added enough cream for it to be lukewarm and chugged it by the sink until the caffeine hit him and then taken a second full cup with only a touch of creamer to the porch to sip slowly and watch the day begin.
Today, there was minimal creamer left in the container so he skipped the first cup’s quick downing and walked the second cup out. Danny walked over to the cup and picked it up. He inhaled deeply. The metallic scent was coming from the cup.
Danny turned and walked the cup back into the house. He ignored his wet sneakers, letting them squeak on the tiles. He placed his cup on the counter and went to the fridge. He opened the creamer and sniffed. There was no metallic scent coming from it. Given how much of it he consumed this week, he was pleased it had no strange additions.
He put it back in the fridge and closed the door. Danny turned to the coffee pot and lifted the carafe from the burner. The coffee itself, when he sniffed hard the same scent. He put the coffee back on the burner and turned the pot off. Curious, he opened the top of the coffee machine, where he poured water. It was empty now, save for a few condensed steam droplets on the inside of the pot. He sniffed and the scent was stronger. Moreover he could see some dark particles in the bottom near the drip function. Danny closed the top of the machine and went to the faucet.
He took out a glass and dispensed some water into it. The water came out clear and clean. No bits in it and no scent to it.
Danny emptied the glass and went to the cabinet with his thermos. He took out the thermos, poured the coffee into the thermos and then screwed the lid down tight.
He then got a garbage bag and put the coffee pot itself in the bag. He coffee cup he emptied and put in the sink to wash later. Danny then picked up the thermos and bag and used the interior door to go into the garage. He stowed the items in the trunk and got into the car. His brother Mike was a detective at the station and had been complaining about being on duty early mornings this week.
