Monday, October 5th: The Five Word Challenge

Good morning. As everyone knows this is the challenge where we take five random words and try to work them into a single piece of writing. The goal is to think about the words we use, as well as to use these. I’ll put the definitions below so you can see the multiple meanings some words have or even the official definitions of some familiar ones. Hopefully that will not only spark ways to use the words, but ways to use them in different ways to your normal everyday usage. So without further ado…

Today’s Words: Check, Spite, Smile, Shied, Bottom

Check: verb 1.examine (something) in order to determine its accuracy, quality, or condition, or to detect the presence of something.2. stop or slow down the progress of something  undesirable) .noun 1.an examination to test or ascertain accuracy, quality, or satisfactory condition.2. a stopping or slowing of progress. exclamation2.used by a chess player to announce that the opponent’s king has been placed in check. 1.informal•North American English expressing assent or agreement.

Spite: noun a desire to hurt, annoy, or offend someone. verb deliberately hurt, annoy, or offend (someone).

Smile: verb

form one’s features into a pleased, kind, or amused expression, typically with the corners of the mouth turned up and the front teeth exposed. noun

Shied: (especially of a horse) start suddenly aside in fright at an object, noise, or movement.

“their horses shied at the unfamiliar sight”, avoid doing or becoming involved in (something) due to nervousness or a lack of confidence.

Bottom: noun 1.the lowest point or part of something. 2. a person’s buttocks. adjective 1.in the lowest position. Physics denoting a flavor (variety) of unstable quark having an electric charge of – 1/3. Bottom quarks have similar properties to down quarks and strange quarks, but are distinguished from them by having a larger mass. verb (of a performance or situation) reach the lowest point before stabilizing or improving.
