Writing Prompt: Who is Oscar?

Morning all. I hope you are having a good Tuesday. I’m still ragweed sniffily but I think I am coming out on the other side of it. At least that is the hope. For now, the sinus tabs are doing their job so lets just jump into the morning prompt while the sniffles are at bay. Timers set for fifteen minutes and off we go.

I like the set up. I’ll have to get a fix on Anna’s actual age and situation, but I do like the set up. It can go so many ways from here.

Tuesday, October 7th: Who is Oscar?

“Who is Oscar?” Anna asked.  The others at the table smiled, some mockingly.

“Everyone knows Oscar,” Carley replied.  She shook her head at the ridiculousness of the question.  I tried not to sigh.

I was living across the country with my mom.  When she got remarried to my step-father I was sent across the country to live with my father and step mother as well as their three kids.  Since their kids all went to the same school, I was enrolled as well.

I was supposed to arrive a week and a half ago but only arrived yesterday.  If I had been expecting any time to settle in before jumping into things, I would have been sorely disappointed.  I was picked up at the air port and brought to the house.  I was shown my room and despite the time difference I ate dinner with the family before going up to my room.  I unpacked, finding several copies of my school uniform already hanging in the wardrobe, my school supplies on the desk.  Topping the pile had been the reading list I was supposed to complete over summer vacation so I could be ready for class on the first day.

Which happened to be the next morning.

Luckily I read almost all of the books on the list.  I noted the ones I hadn’t gotten around to and decided I would read them as soon as possible.

I was pleased that I would not be starting as behind everyone as I thought.  That was my last thought before I fell into bed, slipping into unconsciousness almost immediately.

I woke with the alarm, feeling like it was still the middle of the night.  I managed to drag myself to the shower and into the school uniform, barely making it downstairs in time to join the others in the mad dash for the bus.  I felt like I had been running ever since.  I may have been okay on my reading assignments and luckily when I was called on to participate in a class discussion it was on a book I knew well, but I wasn’t dialed into anything else.

I didn’t know anyone at the school.  My three step brothers were all in different years and none had any desire to be associated with me let alone help me out.  They, for the most part, pretended I didn’t exist.  Everyone else seemed stunned that I knew nothing of the social scene in the school.  I didn’t know who was popular and who wasn’t.  I didn’t know who fell into what category so I couldn’t find my group either.  My old school didn’t have uniforms and it had been fairly easy to pick which group you belonged to.

Here I was flying blind.

It didn’t help that I still felt half asleep.

I was sitting at a table that seemed inviting enough.  It turned out one of the girls invited me because she had a crush on one of my step-brothers.  Once she saw they were ignoring me, she somewhat soured on the idea and I suspected I would not be invited to join their table again.

At the moment, I was pretty pleased about that even if I didn’t know where else to sit. I was getting rather annoyed by the smug smirks.
