Writing Prompt: He vanished into thin air.

Morning all. Let’s just jump into the morning prompt and start a fresh week. Hopefully it will be less angst inducing than last week. Fingers crossed and timers set.

I like this. Not sure what the world is like yet, but I like what I have of the set up. Its an interesting start anyway.

Monday, October 13th: He vanished into thin air.

He vanished into thin air.  Carla slowed, her steps going from a run to a walk and then finally stopping all together as she stared at the blank brick wall.  He had been right in front of her.  She had not taken her eyes off him for a second until he turned the corner entering the alleyway.  Then she followed, only a few paces behind, but he was gone.

Hesitantly she touched a hand to the brick wall in front of her.  It was solid, no illusion.  She pressed and tapped all of the bricks, listening for changs in sound, hollowness, shifting of the surface,  There was nothing.  It was a solid wall.

She stepped back and methodically searched the two side walls leading to the buildings on either side of the narrow alleyway. There were no hidden doors.  No secret catches.  She moved to the mouth of the alleyway and stared down the alley once again.

Her mouth pinched into a tight light.  Nothing in Jared’s file indicated he could teleport.  That was a rare skill and one almost always marked in the file even if other information was left out.  To be able to teleport the magic user had to be a high-level mage.  Generally, anyone with that level of power managed to secure themselves a cushy government post.

Jared had no such post.

‘And nothing in his file indicated he was in the range of power levels for teleportation to even be a possibility.’

Carla unclenched her mouth and took her communicator from her belt, unclipping it with a snap.  She pressed the button.  “Subject disappeared,” she told command.  There was the usual squawking. She waited until it died down.

“I am positioned at the alley way mouth.  Either suspect has transportational abilities or there is a hidden door I have yet to be able to find.  Request assistance.”

They knew as well as she did that if she moved from the mouth of the alley Jared might reveal himself and escape once the way was clear.  As the Alley was a narrow brick lined channel with no available exits and nothing for anyone to hidebehind she doubted it but was willing to go wt protocol.

‘Especially since no one from command mentioned the possibility of teleportation.’

As expected, she was told to maintain position.  She did as she was told and soon enough a team was sent to her location.  Carla clipped her communicator back on her belt.  The team that went in ahead of her scanned with various equipment she couldn’t name and wasn’t trained to use.

“No exits,” one of them said to the other.

“I’m getting an energy reading,” the other said.  “Definite teleportation.”

Carla felt herself relax.  She hadn’t lost Jared. She was not equipped to go after someone of teleporter rank and knew she could use that to avoid taking the blame.

She knew someone would be blamed.  The team called in their findings and Carla was told to return to headquarters for a debriefing.

Sanderson was on call today and his voice radiated annoyance through the communications link.  Not wanting to dray his ire in her direction she responded with a simple, ‘Yes Sir,’ and followed orders by heading back to headquarters.

It was not a long trip but by the time she arrived Sanderson was already yelling at the record keepers about missing information.  It was a relief.
