Writing Prompt: Secrets like this can’t be held for very long.

Morning all. Ready to jump into the morning prompt? I’m feeling a little less like jumping and more like occupying myself until the coffee is ready but I think that counts. Timers set and off we go.

Somehow I think someone is going to blame Sherry regardless. But the imposion could be fun to write.

Tuesday, December 30th: Secrets like this can’t be held for very long.

“Secrets like this can’t be held for very long,” Sherry said.

Catherine frowned.  “Are you threatening me?”

Sherry sighed and resisted the urge to roll her eyes.  “No I am not threatening you, I am just stating facts.  Too many people know this secret.  You won’t be able to keep it forever.  So you might want to think about talking to Alison.”

“No,” Catherine said.  She shook her head.  “I’m never telling Alison.”

Shery shrugged.  “Okay.  Just a thought.”

“You better not tell anyone.”  The threat had an edge coming into her voice.

“Not planning to,” Serry replied.  “Besides, it isn’t like we run in the same circles, who would I tell?”

She relaxed.  “True.”  She said.

She turned around and flounced off, long blond hair swaying with the turn.  Catherine had always been pretty.  When we were kids she used it to get what she wanted with eas.  She opened her eyes wide and smiled, with a slight head tilt and people melted.  She still used her looks to get what she wanted, but it was different now.  No longer candy and ice cream.

Catherine had been Sherry’s neighbor and once was her friend.  Then she became one of the pretty popular people and Sherry was just her neighbor and occasional confidant.  Sherry sighed.

She didn’t want to know Catherine’s secrets.  In truth, she didn’t really want to know Catherine any more.

‘But at least I’m honest about not telling,’ Sherry thought.  While her friends knew who Catherine was, they didn’t run in the same circles and gossip about her would be pointless.  No one in her group of friends would care.  Sherry always thought it amusing.  Catherine’s set were the undisputed kings and queens of the school.  They held court and ruled their group.  They were looked up to by those around them and feared by those they considered enemies.

But the school was large enough that there were in fact several courts.  Kings and queens in neighboring kingdoms.  And the kingdoms only bothered with each other when borders were crossed.  Sherry’s friends were so far removed from Catherines that faces were known but names would need physical descriptions to make certain everyone knew who was who.

Sherry listened to Catherine talk about her friends like she would listen to someone talk about a foreign land.  She could put faces with names because they often visited Catherine but that was about it.

She did know that Alison was Catherine’s best friend.  ‘And little likely to appreciate Catherine sleeping with her boyfriend.’

Catherine seemed to believe she could get away with anything, mostly because she always had.  Sherry thought she might have gone a step too far this time. Catherine didn’t seem to think so and also thought the secret could be held.  Sherry knew that at least three of Catherine’s friends knew and suspected more were in on the secret.

‘And I’m willing to bet at least one of those friends is holding a grudge,’ Sherry thought.  Anytime she saw Catherine’s friends they seemed to be sniping at each other.  Frenimies more than friends.
