The 2026 Novel Writing Challenge: Task # 7

Good morning everyone I hope you are ready for the final push of the week.  Today we are not reviewing our five sentences because we are reaching the final sentence.  So, no hold music.

The fifth point in our five sentence break out is where we want the story to end.  At least at this stage.  It could change or it could remain the same.  For now, it is where we want the story to end.  I’m pretty sure you know where we are going with this.

We need to get from our point four to our point five.

I know, I should have warned you to practice your shocked face.  Sorry about that.

So today’s task we look at where we are with point four and then we are going to list out five points to get us from #4 to the end of #5.

I did have someone ask me why five points for each of these instead of three, so before we jump in I’ll give you my quick take.  I like five because it gives you more to work with and I also feel when I put just three points, I find those points have to stretch a bit further.  When we get to putting together more of an outline (or as close to an outline as I really get) I find those three points just don’t give me enough and I have to think a bit more about how to break them down. It often slows me down a bit when I just stare at the three, knowing something is missing and not quite seeing what.

If I start with five points it becomes a little bit easier to break down later and I find I am missing less than if I went with three. Sometimes I have to pare it down because five might be too many for that one section.

But fear not, as I get writing I will use the three act system to organize the manuscript.

So to the task!  Or the example of the task. If you recall we broke down Bob two ways last time.  I kind of like the Bob gets divorced as my point four rather than Bob has to find a new job.  It fits with the ending in my example a little bit better and has a bit of a better flow.  (and this is why we so frequently went back over those sentences.)

So…

Example

4-Bob gets divorced.

5-Before finally leaving it all behind to buy a boat and sail off into the sunset.

1-Bob moves into a small apartment, taking his belongings with him.

2-The assets are split and the paperwork is done.

3-Bob gets a call from his brother about a job near him using his Marine Biology degree and Bob realizes there is no need to stay in the area anymore,

4-Bob applies for the job and gets it.  He realizes there is little from his past here that he wants to take with him, so he sells or donates all but he few personal items and buys a boat.

5-Bob lets go of the temporary apartment, boards the boat and sails off to the port town where his brother lives and his new job awaits.

This was our last Task for the week so once you are finished, revel in the fact that you have completed a week of tasks. There are no weekend tasks mostly because what we did needs to marinate a little bit before we get into our next task, which will be bright and early Monday morning. My task will be posted shortly and I hope you have a fantastic weekend. Try to let the story sit for a few days without looking at it. That way we have a short rest before we look it over. Happy Writing!
