The Fifteen Minute Novel 2026: Day 181

I wasn’t quite finished with the story I was telling by the time 2025 ended and so decided to continue it until it reached an ending point. Then I will start a new one. Besides, I kind of want to see where Penelope ends up. And so we have…

Day 181: It made Penelope wonder if everyone feared attack.

It made Penelope wonder if everyone feared attack. As her arm was still aching from Peter’s attack she had to concede protection charms had a definite place.  “But how often are people attacked?”

She had no answer but suspected she might want to find an answer. “Maybe Peter is a one off.”

Mixed in with the protection spells were charms for good luck and prosperity.  As Penelope listed them out she wondered how effective they were.  The protection charms she wore helped her out and were melted in the attack, giving their all, but how effective would a luck charm be?

Penelope stared at the luck charm on it’s delicate chain.  She looked back to the definition.  She read through the description.

“Apparently it isn’t active all the time,” she mused.  “It’s like a small burst of luck when you really want something.  You hold the charm or the count of five to activate and you will have better luck finding what you are looking for.” There was even a small chart under the description detailing how long one could expect the luck of a charm to last.  Given that the length of luck depended on the ingredients and procedures, she had no idea how long this one would work.

“But I suppose if I made it, I would know what I put into it.”  She suspected if she did start making charms, she would need to keep a record so she didn’t forget. “Although even with the most complex ingredients it doesn’t seem to last long.”

According to the chart the basic level luck charm would grant five minutes of good luck.  If someone went all in with the high end of ingredients and lengthy processes it could be pushed to fifteen minutes.

“But then the charm has to rest for a full seventy two hours before it can be used again.”

Given how complex it seemed even the basic five minute one was to make, she wondered if it was worth it.  Penelope looked at the charm and had the desire to test it out.  She looked at the other jewelry and then thought about the batch of jewelry she untangled previously.  There were a lot of loose chains and bracelets.  She didn’t want to be untangling them every time she wanted them, but she didn’t really have a place to keep jewelry that could remain untangled.  She had her small jewelry box but that was it.

“That second hand shop had some Jewelry boxes,” Penelope remembered.  She looked at the charm.  “It wouldn’t be a bad thing to have a separate jewelry box to keep charmed items in anyway,” she justified.   With a start she realized that the store she visited was within walking distance.  It was only a few blocks down and a few streets over.  It would be easy to walk to.

“And a good reason to get out of the house,” she slipped the charm over her head.  The chain was long enough that it was an easy fit.
