Morning all. Today we have the last of our research lists. Admittedly once we make the lists, we then have to do the research. This one can come with pictures and websites if you need to have them. Mine will actually need some castle based floor plans as I am working on a fantasy novel and have a character who will have to visit several castles. On Monday we will start to get emotional and work on our story arcs and emotional journeys. We just needed to let our basic plot points rest for a bit to gain some distance. We also needed time to figure out what we needed to know about our characters and world. Even though there will be tasks each day, a lot of that research will be added to as we continue forward. But for today…
Task #26: Specialized Landscapes, Buildings and any pertinent details, list them out and add pictures links and other relevant data.
Like I said in my story I will be researching the layouts of various castles, both floorplans and how they look on the landscape when they aren’t ruins.
For Bob I would look at the lumber yard. Thee is a huge warehouse with open bits where wood is kept and aged, but there are also offices. If I were researching Bob I may look on line, but I do know we have at least one lumber yard in town. I may go wandering through, looking at the space to get a feel for the lay out in person. For that I tend to keep a notebook in the car and make notes there. While this works with some businesses others don’t really like seeing you make notes after you study the business.
Try not to look like you are casing the place.
Some places you can take pictures of for reference, others you can’t. Just be mindful of the place you are in and their rules. But if you can go to a place you are writing about, or a place similar to one you are writing about it is a lot better. It will give you a better feel of the space when you write it if you have actually been to the space.
And that is our task for the day. I know it has been a week of lists, but soon, the emotional story starts, and in all fairness, we did need the research week. Have fun, revisit your research pages often as we proceed into the depths of Story. And I will see you back here on Monday with the next task.
