The 2026 Novel Writing Challenge 2026: My Task #34

There isn’t much to post with this task actually. It is all about organization and making sure you don’t have any gaps to fill in. I kind of find this moment exciting. It is the last of the pre writing research phase.

Don’t get me wrong there are always things I need to look up as I write simply because they occur to me then, but it really helps to have things squared away before starting.

I will especially look over the names list. When pulling together and organizing my research I tend to make sure all of my characters have names. Even the ones you only see once as part of the background. I may never add the name to the text but I really like having the name just in case.

Mostly because when I write if I can’t find a name and it isn’t one of the important named characters I tend to glance at the bookshelf near my desk and just pull a name from one of the spines. I jumble up first and sur names so as not to copy names directly for characters.

The problem is I have to remember to shuffle the books or I just keep reusing the same names. In case you were wondering, this is why I tend to use a lot of the same names in my morning fifteen minute writing prompts. A quick glance to the left and I grab a name from a book spine. I also haven’t shuffled the books in a while.

I might add that to my to do list later today.

But for now, it is time to organize the research and fill in the gaps. For tomorrow we have another task…

Have a great day.
