The 2026 Novel Writing Challenge: Task #34

Good morning everyone. Today’s task is a light one and it is going to get us ready for the jumping off point. This is the last research related Task before we start pulling together our chapter list and begin our final approach into writing the novel we have spent the last two months planning. Despite it being a light task it is an important one. Are you ready?

Task #34: Go back through your research and make sure you have your information together and organized in a way that is easy to use while you write.

I know it sounds a bit like a fluffy task, but there is nothing worse than knowing you looked something up and then when you need it during your writing you can’t find it. If your research is on the computer, this is the time to label your files of photos. If you have one long document, add headers in a larger test in a different color so you can easily scroll and see the topic. If using a notebook, tabs are always a good option. I am a big fan of those stick post it nots tabs where I can stick them on the side of the page and write a note on them. I tend to use those with hand drawn maps so I can see what house lay out is which and separate towns and things. It is a little thing, but it is really important.

So for today’s task, we organize so that as we write, it takes but a second to find any reference material we may need when working. It limits the amount of time you have to stop writing and look for something, and if you have only a limited amount of time to write each day, can be a life saver. While you go through, see if there is anything you missed and that you might want to add to your research.

And I will see you tomorrow for a bright new task. Have a great day and happy organizing.
