The Fifteen Minute Novel 2026: Day 209

I wasn’t quite finished with the story I was telling by the time 2025 ended and so decided to continue it until it reached an ending point. Then I will start a new one. Besides, I kind of want to see where Penelope ends up. And so we have…

Day 209: The women escorted her over to a nearby building.

The women escorted her over to a nearby building. Penelope followed realizing she must have gotten injured in the cart crash or by one of the horses.  The building they took her too was some sort of medial office.  She was taken straight back to the doctor and Penelope watched as she was given a does of morphine and her arm was set by the attending doctor.

Penelope winced, remembering her own pain when the doctor set her broken arm.  She watched as the doctor wrapped the arm tightly and gave Emily much of the same advice that Penelope was given.  He also sent her home with a bottle containing pain medicine.

By then Emily was somewhat loose and wobbly on her feet.  The women once again gathered around her they appeared to be escorting her home.  The word wobbled, the heat haze returning.  Penelope frowned as it seemed strange the scene was over. She wondered what she was supposed to learn from the accident.

Instead of being in the street again watching the stampeding horses, the scene reset and Penelope found herself standing in a bedroom.

‘Emily’s bedroom,’ Penelope realized.  Emily was propped up in bed.  Her arm was still wrapped but her eyes looked clear.  There was a book on the bed.  Another woman walked in and set down a cup of tea.  There was a lemon slice already floating on the surface.

“To take away the taste of the pain medicine,” the woman said.  “I know you don’t care for it, but it will help you sleep and sleep is what will help you heal.”

Emily smiled at the woman.  “Thank you,” she said.  “I’ll take it in a minute.  I just want to finish this chapter first.”

“All right but don’t leave it too long.”  The woman moved to the night stand and poured a measure of the liquid pain medication into a small glass.  She set the glass next to the tea cup and stoppered the bottle. “All ready for you,” She then turned and left the room leaving Emily alone.

Emily watched her leave and when she was gone, the door closed, She sat up straighter in the bed.  She took a deep breath and concentrated on her arm.  “Heal not grow,” she muttered to herself.  Penelope watched and felt the magic as Emily used it on her arm.  It was similar to the healing of the cut, but somehow slightly different.  Penelope edged closer and studied the magic.

It was a strange sensation as she could feel it more than see it.  Still she narrowed her eyes as though squinting would help.  Sweat beaded on Emily’s forehead and her free hand gripped the blankets.  She grimaced with mixed pain and determination.  Still when she finally fell back exhausted against the pillowed, Penelope knew her arm was healed.  There was no dramatic show of blood, but she could feel the break healing.

‘Maybe because I want to,’ she thought.  Emily took a deep breath and pushed herself back off the pillow.  She picked up the small glass containing her medicine and stretched over to the slightly open window.  She poured the pain medicine out of the window and then set the empty glass next to the tea cup.  She picked up the teacup and sat back in bed, a satisfied look on her face as she was able to move her arm freely.

The scene rippled and once again Penelope watched the out of control horses race down the street.
